Not Corrado related but started experimenting with electrolysis rust removal with a golf rear axle and emptied this morning wheely bin


It’s only just gone in and I’m slightly underwhelmed atm. My neighbour has been doing engine ancillaries for over a week now with good effect.

Anyone else tried it?

I’ve rejigged the set up a little, for safety as much as anything. I’ve just been out to check it and it seems to be working

These are the sacrificial golf struts used, I’ve not wore brushed the axle yet, pics of that once done.




If that’s been removed then it looks a good result?

I’ve a g60 rear axle to do next

Looks great. And certainly not out of the realms of the home enthusiast. Tried this myself a few years back, with mixed results (chunky stuff great, delicate items not so much).

Arm and hammer soda crystals and an old battery charger was what I used if I remember.

Love the use of a wheelie bin though. You told the council yet ?

I use washing soda from Home Bargain, 90p ATM.

I might phone them when this crisis is over just to see if it was OK. Perfect for rear axles, 2 days then flip it over. G60 axle is on its second day pre flip

It's a Corrado, it BROKE....

Oh well, atleast it is out. And secondly I got this baby out the box. It cheered me up seeing a Stoplock with working flashing led !!

Hello guys hope everyone is well and keeping safe and busy in lockdown.  I wasn't happy at how my front subframe was looking so dropped it down, and cleaned it up using my mains grinder and wire wheel, plus a die grinder with air compressor for the smaller crevices. Then finally I used some acid rust killer that was brushed all over subframe, the stuff I use is (Wenko Rust Killer) It works really well but is really corrosive so eye protection and mask are a must. Plus I did the same with the anti roll bar as that was looking tatty.

Photos of before and after cleanup of subframe.

Just waiting for my paint to arrive then can get it finished off and bolted back up.

Wow that is a great transformation- that rust treatment does the job great ! Good graft there !

Major transformation there, good effort!

I uncovered and started mine, ran it up to temperature, stopped it and put the cover back on again, shut the garage door!

OH Ok I remember one member saying they had a 30K (around that) example from memory and was left in the garage- said it was been left to the family think that is why I got confused.

First coat of zink 182 primer just got to leave it to harden, then will go over it again with red oxide which is pretty much chip resistant really tough paint. Also got new engine mounts to fit, plus I'll rub down steering rack and paint that also whilst the subframe is down, and treat the chassis areas where the subframe is bolted to.

VW Rule I was at Stealth and they painted a subframe with POR 15 had a lovely finish and one little can did two coats of one subframe - apparently it is great stuff  and has great resistance against stone chips and rust, much better than powder coating. 

 

POR-15 Rust Preventative can be sprayed or brushed on to provide a rock hard, yet flexible, non-porous coating that will not shrink, peel, or crack. It is totally resistant to road salt, petrol, battery acid, etc., and actually dries harder in humid damp conditions. Ideal for suspension and chassis protection.

Cant say the same as above for powder coating.

Frustration opitimised. Finished painting the underside this morning, on the upward curve now with beginning to put everything back together. Still awaiting my brake lines, so decided to start at the front and get the subframe back on this afternoon. Got it up, did the bolts up hand tight but couldn't get one of the bloody PAS pipes unions on so had to drop the subframe again and put them both in. Raised it again and torqued up the bolts, put in the engine mount bolts and removed the engine support. Feeling like I'd accomplished something and that'll do for today. Tidying away the tools and what do I see on the work bench, PAS pipe crush washers! 🤬😫

Those power steering unions are the worst, feel for you!

Got the bonnet stuck! Unusually it’s released on the passenger side but sticking on the driver’s, every time I’ve known it in the past it’s been the other way round. Pulling the release handle it feels like there’s not enough resistance so I’m guessing the end cone’s slipped. Shut the garage door in disgust!
