  1. Working on it, did half last night - it's much easier to do that write about!
  2. Thanks Kev. I know this might sound daft, but what earth should I be checking? I've tried to find one relating directly to the headlamps but to no avail. The battery earth connection is clean enough. I'll rewire the loom tonight and see how it goes...
  3. Blown three, two on passengers side, one on drivers. Interestingly the first bulb as a cheap one from a spare bulb kit and it actually melted the glass into a boil like protrusion!
  4. Any thoughts on why mines keep blowing Kev? I've checked several times and voltages are al normal. Everything on the car operates as it should and really at a bit of a loss as to what to look for :( Lights worked great with the loom connected, but just kept blowing the bulbs. :(
  5. I completely agree with this - I just don't get it. I can never fathom how there are so many people running about in flash cars that cost more than my mortgage, in houses that are worth many times what my flat is, having expensive clothes, eating out in restaurants whilst going on holidays. they can't all be company directors! I live in a small flat and could barely afford even a very low end brand new car, never mind a 2 week package holiday. And i can't remember the last time I bought new clothes! I'm fortunate that these thing's don't bother me, but at the same time, I think I must be missing some big trick that lets me afford these things! Where does the money come from?! I think one day the real credit crunch will come - when people (in the UK) can't afford their debt, or miss one month which topples everything else. And then the banks will REALLY fall. That's my rant over... :)
  6. 944 S2's are fantastic machines. I had one for 6 months or so and really liked it. Driving position was spot on and handling so nice and neutral. Was fortunate mine never had any issues as I dreaded pricing parts for it. Loved the trip meter reset in the vent, and the handbrake at the door! Think you're on the right tracks price wise for your car.
  7. Good luck! It's actually not too hard once you get your head around it and realise it's just a big mecanno set. If you want I could list through the tasks and suggest an order to help get you started? Wouldn't be comprehensive, but hopefully cover most things. It's always easier if you know roughly what to be doing, rather than have to start from scratch. Let me know if that'd help, J
  8. Found this guide online - i think it follows on what people have said earlier, but more pictures to help clarify. Took me a few reads to really get the hang of it and understand how they squared the string with the car, but makes sense. Plus, I like pictures :) Think I'll give this a shot soon - it's £90 a pop to get camber and alignment done so will make a saving possibly in the long term. Also means i don't have to replace every suspension component in one pop (which I can't afford to do). http://elantragtclub.tripod.com/elantra/id554.html
  9. Yeah, alternator is a pain, but only because you have to strip the front, which is not a big deal really, but nonetheless, a lot of work for what will only be a small amount of work. I usually save up tasks and do them in a oner. Do you have anything else you need to do?! Good shout about temporary in-car meter to check. Will also rewire the loom and see if that makes a difference. Will keep posted!
  10. There is something wrong when each month I spend more on fuel than I do on food, clothes and drink! Is it the fuel price, or do i just drive too much (or not drink enough)?!
  11. I've been p'd off at gas going up 10p in the last two months, but at least petrol has gone up inline. £25 gets me 200miles.
  12. I know. I've tried to wean myself off VW, but I'm too much of a 'it must do everything well even if nothing excellent' rather than other makes that do certain things well but rot away, or chews bushes, bearings brakes and electrics...lol. Loved my old Scimitar, my first V6 and it got me hooked :)
  13. Fitted my new solid front engine mount. Makes the car feel more together on corners and gearchanges are slicker ( although the shift itself is the same as before). I'm a happy chappy :) Thanks to CazzaVR for his advice before i fitted, was exactly as he said :)
  14. hmmm... checked voltage tonight, max 14.2v. Bummer. Will try a couple more times, in case it's intermittent. Back to the drawing board for me :(
  15. I'm approaching 30 :( and this is how i ended up with my Corrado... Land Rover 2A 1969 - First car, had it 7years and still trying to find it to buy back. Volvo 360GLT - at 17 the RWD thing was so much fun and 114bhp seemed to be amazing! Volvo 360GLT Honda Civic CRX Mercedes 190 Mini Italian Job Porsche 944 S2 - As good as the Corrado but costs 3x more to maintain and no V6 roar Reliant Scimitar SE6a - a crcking old school car, would have another if i had the cash n space. Vauxhall Cavalier TD VW Corrado 1.8 VW Corrado G60 VW Golf Mk1 1.6 Diesel VW Golf MK1 Gti 16v VW Scirocco 1.8 VW Golf Mk2 16v VW Golf Mk2 16v VW Golf Mk2 VR6 - Awful handling, never again! VW Golf Mk3 Gti VW Golf MK3 VR6 VW Golf Mk3 VR6 VW Polo 1.4 16v (6N) VW Polo 1.6 8v (6N) Citroen Xantia Activa - if you find one cheap, buy it for the fun - no body roll and amazing at jumping hump back bridges! Vw Polo Tdi (6N2) VW Golf Mk2 16v VW Corrado VR6 Won't be changing it for a while yet :)
  16. Small tip that will save you so much hassle and time when removing and refitting the driveshafts. Buy a driveshaft removal tool from ebay or wherever. It's simply an extra long spline (M10) allen style shaft that you can fit onto a rachet. The subframe/engine mounts and calipers are designed in such a way that you can loosen the bolts with only the wheel off and without even going under the car. Something like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Laser-2897-Spline ... 2a089421bd . It's worth every penny.
  17. Funny you mention ECU's, my car is very temperamental, sometime fast and good economy, sometimes slow, sometimes poor economy. One thing i notice is that if i run the engine fans (via the bypass switch I've fitted), they run at idle, but revving to 1k, they pick up a fair amount of speed. Obv the rev will produce more voltage, but it's a pretty big jump. Figuring if this happens with the fas, it must be happening to other components like you say V8. Will update how I get on once i've checked it tho...
  18. Gosh! I've not got a multi meter handy and completely forgot to get one today. Sounds like this will be my problem too. Sorry if this seems a silly question, but where did you measure the voltage? Across the battery when running, or from the alternator wire to earth? I'll need to search replacing the regulator...hmm...At least i like fixing so will get done at the same time as I paint the shocks etc... :) Busy weekend ahead!
  19. guess this is how a thread gets (sp)hammed up then!!
  20. hehe. I was kinda worried when i saw the letter in case i owed so was quite relieved. I've read a bit about the arb's, but still not quite sure how they will change my standard springs with Koni shocks. Will it simply reduce roll, or turn it into an oversteeres rather than under? I do spend a lot of time on twisty b roads and always find the car too nose heavy, although on fast a roads it's perfect...hmm...
  21. Evening all, Got a small tax rebate from HMRC, and it's already burning a hole, despite the fact I've not cashed the cheque. Looking for thoughts on the best way to spend it on the car. Recently I've done - balljoints, discs/pads all round (but not braided front hoses for the 312's), solid front engine mount on order, new tyres all round, expensive sparks recently, oil cooler already fitted, R32 wishbone bush, upgraded loom (although wonky just now), coolant is nice n clean, tappets and chains have been done) I like my car as a drivers car rather than for looks, but can't decide -should I get loads of small bits n bobs like sensors, hoses etc.. or one big thing like a rear ARB? I can fit most things myself so that will hopefully increase scope. Suggestions most welcome! Cheers, J
  22. I've got the same issue, although it only started after I fitted an upgraded loom with OEM connectors. I've had to unplug it as i've been through 3 sets of bulbs, including the same Philips ones. Problem is, the lights are shocking without the loom! argh!
  23. Standard. :) I put mine back to standard height a while back and much prefer it EXCEPT for looks. I am running 45 profile tyres, but have 50's on the front just now as winter tyres and they actually fill the gap better making it looks more acceptable. In terms of handling, once you get used to it, it's fantastic, as a high speed run down from Inverness last night proved. Still got phenomenal levels of grip, very compliant on the bumpy stuff meaning you can often go faster on poor roads because you're not getting flung all over the place and don't need to worry about getting flung off the road if you hit a bump mid corner!. Just my thoughts. I'm keen to try H&R springs tho to see if they retain the comfort of standard. Oh, I've got Koni top adjutables on as well which probably compliment the standard springs nicely.
  24. Fitted new VAG balljoints on both sides today. Note to self - use a fork tool to extract the balljoint and don't bother trying to chop the bolts and use a scissor tool. Next up - new 312 discs and pads.
  25. Feel an update is due. Fitted Continental WinterContacts to the front - amazing! Been over all the snow covered roads i can find this morning and the car just sails over them all. Not even any wheels spin on steep hills, dreaded snow understeer is gone to be replaced by an easily catchable oversteer if you deliberately knock it out of balance. Best £50 i've spent this year i think!
