engine cuts out in traffic after engine temp reaches 112+
Joe M replied to thinksmart's topic in Engine Bay
In fact I meant to say I had to replace the whole distributor as it was a 2.0 16v, but I think the hall sender can be replaced seperately on the 1.8 -

I had a similar problem in my old 16v, although it happened at nearer to 90. It turned out to be the hall sender in the distributor that was knackered, replaced this and all was fine. -
Have you tried an ecu reset? although I dont think this makes a big difference to fuel consumption, maybe 2-4 mpg's. How does your exaust tailpipe look? I accidentaly run my car for a few minutes with the maf unplugged and it sooted up heavily.

Isnt that Johns (username 16vg60). -
Yeah, I noticed. I wanted it to sound even meatier though and the insurance co wanted £65 for an induction kit so I decided to mod it a bit more.

I think Euro Car Parts sell body panels.

So is it still 2 drivers side arms that are required, with the new part no. But this time 2 drivers side blades with the new part no. instead of one of each blade?

Its not just an extra 8mm of leverage, its the amount of pad in contact with the disc that increases as well, im not sure of the figures but it is a worthwhile increase from what ive read. Id like the Brembos as well but dont want to alter the ride quality by changing wheels as my car drives so well at the moment.

Trust me, it will be worth it. Think how hot the leather gets in the sun, now imagine the opposite in the winter. If you wanna take a look at mine at some point to see how its all wired give me a shout. Im hoping to have a lot of the interior apart this week at some point when im fitting my speakers and new wiring so could be a good time.

Cheers Mike, :thumbleft: ill decide what to do once I know the exact condition of the brakes ive got.

Scott, do you think your possible coilpack problem in the other thread could be related to your idle?
-
Have you tried just cleaning them out? Give the sensors a wipe and make sure the teeth in the sensor ring arent clogged.

Sounds a bit extreme sc16v, I just cut out the wingside front corner of both of mine (16v and vr6) and that does the job nicely. Dont think it would get much louder.

So far I think im leaning towards a 288mm setup with ate powergrooves (Should get away with this on the insurance side). I dont drive like a chimp but have noticed serious brake fade on the vr and the pedal just doesnt feel as solid as my old 16v did. I am due a brake fluid change so ill maybe get goodridge hoses at the same time as well, anyone know if its the same hoses for the 288mm setup? as I dont want to put them on the car now then find I need different ones in a month or 2.

Im looking to upgrade my brakes in the near future. Im wanting to stay on the standard speedlines for a good while yet but would like to know my options with bigger calipers or whatever. At the moment the options I can think of are. 1. Just upgrade the pads and disks to Pagid or Tarox. 2. Upgrade to late Golf vr6 288mm brake setup. 3. Wait for bigger wheels and get something bigger. (Expensive though.) Anybody got any other ideas? I seem to remember a Trevor Rice on the yahoo groups had a different setup behind the standard Storm Solitudes that used Corvette pads or something, anybody know anything about this setup? Wilwood calipers I think.

Its not to do with the exaust emmisions though, is it. The point of it is to stop fuel vapours from the tank getting vented to atmosphere and instead getting rerouted back into the intake system. I dont see what difference it would make how old the carbon can is as it just stores the vapours until the valve opens then the vapours get sucked into the intake and burnt off. I thought removing it caused running problems with my car but I know think it was because I started it with the maf unplugged, I noticed it straight away and the car never ran right after plugging it in. Ive now done an ecu reset and my car is running perfect without the carbon canister or valve. Only negative point ive noticed is the occasional whiff of fuel vapours as the tank is now venting to atmosphere.

Try this Loosen the pin slightly Press it harder Simple, worked for me in my 16v, I think the switch must wear out or something and it needs a bit extra force to activate it.

Give http://www.elephant.co.uk a go, they seem to be very cheap just now, there the same company as Admiral and Bell Direct I think but they only do there insurance over the web page so have less overheads and lower prices.

Wouldnt mind an older porsche myself, my uncle recently bought a 944 turbo in red and even though its probably the most common porsche its stilll a great car. The 850 is a great looking car I think, but even though the engine is huge (v12, 850 csi model a 5.5litre or something?) the car would probably be too big and heavy, great for cruising though. E30 m3, if only they made rhd. Audis are smart though, an s3 would always be an option but dont think it would be as fun as the C.

lol, would have said an M3 Evo but u would get mistaken for a dealer driving one of those about here. Maybe an Alpina 3 series or something. Indecisevness like this is why I bought another Corrado, I knew I wouldnt go wrong. Probably when im in the position where I could change cars I will just go for a charger for the vr.

 NOOOOO joe  ...........your streed-cred has gone down in my estimation    Ive liked them for many years, since before they became common. They are 2 cylinders short of an engine though so probably something more like an M5 Nurburgring Edition. 8)

I think my next car would be an Impreza, would have to be an RB5 or P1 though.

Not sure if it is normal as im sure the noise wasnt there before. Will maybe take it apart tomorow for a look if I get the chance. Any other vr owners noticed this?

And I thought it was just my imagination that something was different when I took mine off. Im now convinced to put it back on relocated or you could have had my valve. Sorry not to be any help but cheers for stopping me for thinking im going mad.

I was thinking I should have tried it a bit faster and with a bit of handbrake, might have done some real damage then.
