1. I did something similar ages ago, but I just put a small piece of insulating tape under the connector. Still working many years on :)
2. It isn't anymore :) All now sorted cheers - just waiting for the next thing to break :bonk::bounce2::D
3. Recently took the lower bolts off the bottom suspension to allow me to get the gearbox out by moving the drive shaft out of the way. It's all back together and wheels on the ground, test driven and all seems ok, but I've noticed that the metal plate inside the engine bay on top of the turret spins round. Is this a problem and how do I resolve it? Many thanks :)
4. No. My RA doesn't help, but no - this is a horrible, hateful, sweary job :/ :D
5. Update: This is an utter, utter, utter ******* to do with the engine in place. I had a four post lift, tools galore, lifts and jacks but it is still an utter **** to do with the engine in situ. My advice is this - if you want to do this, then: A: DON'T B: If you must, seriously, DON'T C: If you really, really must, pull the whole lump. D: If you really, really, really must, pay someone else to do it. Hateful thing. VW_OwneR_85 - Spot on (in hindsight)
6. Cheers for the posts. I have access to a four post lift, so that should make things easier too :)
7. Yeah - been having a read through that cheers :) Was hoping to find a guide that was just for the gearbox side. It'll be a fun job in the new year :/
8. I need to remove my gearbox (vr6) - is there an idiots step by step guide anywhere? I've had a search but couldn't really find anything. Many thanks and merry Christmas :)
9. Bugger me - hope you heal ok and the insurance goes through with as little hassle as possible!
10. Right - checked the slave cylinder and no leak. It's deffo slipping now, and getting worse, so I'm going to have to take off the 'box and have a look Is there an idiots guide to removing the gearbox please? I had a search, but couldn't come up with anything. If anyone fancies giving me a hand :p Cheers all :)
11. It just looks complete and utter w**** imvho of course. Kinda like you can afford nice wheels, but then ran out of money and had to scrimp on the rubber. The other issue is that quite simply, stretched tyres are not as safe as correctly sized and fitted tyres.
12. I'm fairly sure the bearing was replaced with the clutch. I suppose a small fluid leak could be causing a bit of contamination, but there's no evidence on the outside to show this. How easy is the slave cylinder to remove and inspect? Is there an inspection plate to see the clutch plate? Cheers :)
13. Ok - got it now :) First off, check the H4 bulbs are both ok and both filaments are intact. You say you have an uprated loom - is it a 2 or a 3 relay one? The relay could be faulty - you'll need a multimeter to check it. You'll need to check that there is a 12v supply to the trigger pin on the relay - it's pin number 86 iirc. You'll want a 12v supply to it when you have the light switch pushed fully in and the lights on dipped mode. If you have a supply there then it points to a faulty relay, or faulty wiring after the relay. You can check you have a 12v output from pin 87 - that's the output that then goes to the lights. Check there's a permanent supply to pin 30 too - that's the relay switched input. Also check pin 30 has a good ground. Sorry if that's teaching you to suck eggs lol If there's no 12v supply to the relay, then it's elsewhere. Good luck :)
14. EDIT - it is slipping, and getting worse :/ I've noticed what seems like a small amount of clutch slip - it's most noticeable if you mash the loud pedal down. The revs seem to rise quicker than the road speed, but only a bit - almost like the clutch is being dipped slightly, or the wheels are spinning up. I'm *fairly* sure the wheels aren't spinning though - seems to happen in all gears, and just for a few seconds. I can't make the clutch slip - going up a hill at 30mph in fifth with foot flat down causes no slip. Likewise, dipping the clutch and raising it under load also causes no noticeable slip. Putting my foot flat on the accelerator and brakes also causes no slip. There appears to be no stinking clutch smell either - to be fair, burning clutch is a very noticeable smell. The best way I can describe it is it feels like it's scrabbling for grip and spinning slightly before gripping and getting the power down. It's unlikely to be doing that at 30mph in third or fourth though! Noticed it yesterday - *seemed* to be worse when the car was cold, but I could have imagined that. Just did a 3 mile journey today and the problem seemed to be noticeable for the whole journey. Clutch was replaced 10k ago and there's a replacement box fitted couple of months ago. Anyone got any ideas as to what it could be? Cheers
15. Daft question then, have you checked the bulbs? The H4's with the twin filament? Actually, still not sure what is and isn't coming on - you say sides dipped and mains  The inner bulbs are H3's single filament - these only come on with the headlights/mainbean on. The outer lights are H4's - these have two filaments - one comes on with the headlights/main bean and the other comes on when the lights are dipped. So - with the headlights dipped, the two outer lights should be on. With the headlights not dipped (on fullbeam/mainbeam/whatever you want to call it) both the inner and outer lights should be on. The outer lights should always be on, whether on dipped or full beam. Ignore the sidelights for the moment. You have both inner and outer lights on with full beam but nothing with dipped, yes? :)
16. Just to clarify, with the switch fully in you don't get dipped main beams, but if you flick the headlight lever you do get full beams? Is that right? With the main beams, is it just the two inner driving/spot lights that come one or do all four lights light up?
17. Blue one in Holt this afternoon at about 3pm ish? Anyone here?
18. No - this is normal: Ignition on-------sidelights on = lit ring on switch. Main beams on = no lit ring Ignition off ------- sidelights or main beams on = lit ring (although the main beams themselves shouldn't be on with the ignition off) :) EDIT - sorry - didn't properly read your post - do your main beams not come on at all?
19. Nice one David - I didn't give Maplins a thought! The one you link to is too big, but the guy in the shop found the right one - for future ref/searches it's FF77J http://www.maplin.co.uk/single-polesub-miniature-2476 I had to modify it a teeny amount - one pin has to be cut off and the holes have a raise lip on them that need drilling/filing off, otherwise it's a direct replacement! 1337 soldering skills yo!
20. The tiny slide switch on the passenger sun visor light has broken - any idea what other vehicles have the same switch I could nick one off? The plastic tab has broken off :( Ta :)
21. My missus is 5'3" and has no problem  Good luck sorting it out :thumbleft:
22. Be aware the cabins are very cramped. There's hardly any elbow room in them :)
23. I have absolutely no idea as to your question :scratch:
24. That's the plug bit on the gearbox. It's just a basic push to make contact switch operated by a small rod off the gearbox. My old one just popped off with a tiny bit of pressure - judicious use of cable ties sorted it until I changed the box over :)
