My VR has started making the most strange noise - it sounds like a load of mice being tortured! It seem s to be coming from the left hand side of the engine as you look at it (air filter side). It doesn't seem to change in pitch with engine revs, which seems a bit odd. Any idea on what it could be? There's a bit of video footage of the noise at the bottom of this link. Is seems most localised on the small metal box I'm aiming the camera at (I think :/) Video Here Any help/pointers gratefully received!!

It was a while ago - I got the leds from Maplin. The fogs/heated screen buttons were ok to do, the headlight switch was a pita as was the mirror and window buttons and the sunroof switch was an utter **** to do. I gave up on the sunroof switch and got one from a '99(?) Seat Toledo that is red from the factory. I'll see if I can dig out the old invoice for the leds etc.

I swapped mine to a red led when I changed the rest of the switch gear. IIRC is was a really small bulb, the likes of which I haven't seen in places like Maplin etc. You may be better off sourcing one from a scrappy tbh :)

Green J plate near Lenwade yesterday at 12.45pm ish. Gave a wave, but you didn't look very happy!!

I had all red illumination for a while - like you say, it's very easy to do. I went to blue/red a couple of years ago - the mfa and mile display are fairly easy to do - the blue is bluer in the flesh as it were and the needles are redder too. The light doesn't have that really intense bit - it's a really good, uniform illumination. The blue light is led strip from Maplin (iirc) rigged in place of the bulbs behind the film. I tried blue film, but it always looked cack. LED was the only way to get good illumination and colour. It all dims with the dimmer dial too. You can just turn over the polarising sheet on the lcd displays if you want them inverted (writing coloured with plain background instead of red background with black writing if that makes sense) :)

Many thanks Ian - I hope Jay will respond soon. His profile says he was online last night 'pm'ing, but I'm still waiting for a response to my 'pm's. His inbox is still full.

Flash red G60 in the Longwater retail park (Norwich) outside Argos/Next at 17.15 today - looked really nice! K928 *** - it's definitely a former forum car (the plate comes up on a search - it was last sold Feb 2011) and it's had a couple of owners on here - you still on this site buddy?

As title - I've sent Jay a couple of pms but he's not been on here to get them for a few weeks. Can anyone who knows him or has his mobile number give him a heads up? Many thanks!

You'd best remove that mate - helpful as it is to the op, it's not best to have that kind of info easily accessible to anyone ;)

I was in the car with the missus and my nearly 3 year old daughter heading off to see some friends in Norwich yesterday. We'd had a nice drive in when all of a sudden we smelt a very acrid, burning smell. We then heard a Fzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt noise, like a short circuit, and then a huge cloud of smoke came billowing out from the dashboard, near the radio!! I panic and slam the anchors on, pop open the bonnet and rip off the positive battery terminal, whilst my missus grabs little 'un from the back. After a few minutes it becomes clear that there is no fire. We gingerly tap the positive terminal on and off a few times, to see if I can hear any more short circuits. Nothing. I decide to leave the terminal attached and maybe move the car out of the middle of the road into a lay-by. I park up, and slowly try/test all the electric things in the car. Lights, wipers, spoiler, sunroof, heater etc all working fine - not a fault in sight. Most peculiar. It was then that I noticed that the heater controls were no longer illuminated - the knob lights were but not the surrounds. Then it dawned on me. Several years ago I changed all the switchgear/illumination to red. I did the dials by using el wire - this was no longer working. I managed to extract the radio and fish out the 12v transformer that powers the el wire to find this: It's a bit hard to see, but the whole unit has bulged, and you can see the hole where all the smoke came from. I usually carry a fire extinguisher in the car, but I took it out a few months ago as it was very much out of date. It was on my "I'll get round to it" list - it's now on my "First thing to do tomorrow" list. The car stinks of the acrid smoke smell, but I'm sure it will dissipate soon. Some of the foam and plastics at the rear of the dash are slightly melted too. Scary scary stuff! Make sure you have an up to date fire extinguisher in your car and don't buy cheap electronics from China. That is all /edit - I now need to work out how to re illuminate the dials!

Eeek - it's the same bulb in the boot too! I think I'll change them both to the led type!

Just whipped mine out (oooeeerrr missus!!) and took a pic for you. It's a 10w jobbie. 30mm long and the glass is 10mm wide.

Difficulty changing gear under very hard acceleration

My vr was laid up for four years. Mine was also over-fuelling and had a poor idle. IIRC I replaced the pcv valve for a new unit and cleaned out the isv and throttle body. This cured the rough idle and over-fuelling issues. What engine is yours? Is it worth getting a price to get your car 'recovered' to the garage? Mine was collected and delivered to the garage (circa 14 miles away) for £30 - this would give you peace of mind regarding insurance and no MOT legalities. I had new pads and discs all round, but was able to keep the existing callipers. Where are you based? Good luck :)
