    Strange Wire

with Phat here, it'll be an alarm trigger for the boot as opening the boot doesn't turn on the interior light, so you need to either tap into the boot light (hence the wire) or tap in a current sensor to detect the current when the boot light comes on...

    engine cutting out

ta, dr_mat, I feel a little more educated now... 8)
  3. don't forget to buy the rubber grommet that goes into the throttle pedal though! If you throttle has become stiff, this will have knackered the grommet and your cable could become disconnected from the pedal while you're driving.... :| (yes, that's the bitter sound of a voice of experience.... )

    engine cutting out

also check that you have remembered to reconnect the throttle's idle switch (if the VR6 has one) as this will cause all sorts of odd running problems...
  5. if the belt is slack, then the odds are you HAVE slipped at least one tooth on the cambelt. When you first lost power, that's when it slipped the first couple of teeth, you then slipped some more when you tried to start it again which has caused it not to start anymore. DO NOT TRY AND START THIS ENGINE AGAIN UNTIL YOU HAVE RE-SET THE TIMING!!! The 16V engine IS an interference engine which means that the valves WILL hit the pistons if the timing belt is not on in the correct place doing pretty expensive damage! Get the engine timed up properly with a new belt and tensioner, and then see if you can get her running again... :? good luck! 8)
  6. swapping the engine, brakes, leather and a few other bits out of J-DUB into the grey one (I really need to name her soon... :| ) and then saving some money to do something a little different... Still not 100% sure what yet though, but it's probably gonna be a first... ;) 8)
  7. nice to see someone putting some time and effort into a cheaply picked up 'rado rather than just breaking it for a profit... 8) Good on you, and good work so far! 8) 8) 8)
  8. they do come out easy, but I have no idea if a Passat one will do it or not... Check the part numbers and see if they're the same... 8)
  9. mmmm, Chevvy V8 with roots supercharger! 8) now THAT'S a proper big engine! :D
  10. HIC will do short term insurance... I insured my Golf for 3 months last year when my Corrado was in bits and the policy ran out... 8) Be aware they will charge you extra for it though... :|
  11. yeah, the castrol stuff has a good reputation too... 8)

    amp q's

hi pass filter lets only the hi frequencies through, so you'd turn that on for speakers which you don't want any bass going to. Lo pass filter lets only the low frequencies through, so you'd turn that on for subs. Depending on what speakers you're running off the amp depends on what frequency range you want putting through to the speakers... For a set of full range (normal multi cone speakers) or even a component set with another seperate crossover, I'd turn on the hi pass and set it to around a third to knock out the bass which they won't handle very well. For a sub, turn on the low pass and have a play until you're happy with the amount of bass you get... 8) I think you may have missed a "K" out in you HP filter's settings though... ;) 20 to 200 Hz is ALL bass!

    Coilovers

coilovers tend to be even harder than a normal set of shocks and springs... :| Have you got the konis on their softest settings?
  14. yup, the box takes 2litres when empty, but the chances of emptying it completely without stripping it down and cleaning each part is zero! 1.5 litres is about average, and you've described the correct way of doing it too, so don't worry about it.... 8) What oil did you use? (just out of interest... 8) )

    Polo Headgasket

the halfords stuff may actually do some damage... :| It's widely known that Rad Weld and the like can clog up some of the smaller waterways inside the engine and actually cause overheating problems... :|
  16. ticking noise is your idle stabilisation valve, don't worry about that, it's supposed to do that... 8) Take the cam belt cover off (big plastic cover on the top left of the engine with 2 clips to hold it on) and then crank her over watching the belt. If the belt isn't turning then you've got a bit of a problem.... :| Let us know if it is this or not... 8)

    anyone got any ideas

the gear knob on all VW MKII Golfs (except automatics) just unscrews. If it's an aftermarket Momo knob you're trying to get off, you'll probably find that the bottom shiney bit unscrews and drops down the shaft and there's 3 allen keys inside which hold it onto the shift lever... 8) The horn one is quite easy. Your buttons aren't wired in properly. There's either a wire missing from the buttons to the boss, or there's a little metal contact on the edge of the horn push (depending on design) which MUST make contact with the boss. The way it should work is that the wire in the steering column should connect onto the switches, then there's either another wire or a piece of metal which connects to the boss to ground it. When you press the button, it simply makes the circuit and sounds the horns... 8)
  18. nope, when I did it I got my no-claims mirrored so that I got FULL NCD (protected) on BOTH cars (Corrado G60 and Astra1.4, and then Corrado G60 and MKII Golf 1.8 driver) I'm pretty sure it added about £200 on for the astra and £275 for the Golf... :|
  19. yup, adding an older female driver will knock off a chunk for you, even if they never drive the car! :| I've just added my girlfriend (who's older than me) onto my new G60 and it knocked off the £50 administration charge, so I can't wait to see what my renewal will be! :D 8)
  20. Phil, that's weird, their on hold wotsit actually goes on about how they specialise in second car policies... :|
  21. the earth strap is dead easy to spot. ;) On the battery, it's the one connected to the -ve terminal. The clamp is actually part of the earth strap on a genuine cable, and should then run down the back of the battery where it's got a bolt holding it onto the chassis leg by the back of the battery tray. It then carries on into the enginebay and bolts onto the gearbox. 8)
  22. The MKI golf DEFINATELY had valves which stopped the water getting into the matrix to make it cooler... I think the MKII had the air flap arrangement the same as the Corrado where the matrix is always at the same temp as the coolant... 8) I'd guess MKIII onwards also use the same method as the Corrado, but I've yet to dismantle one, so I can't say for definate... 8)
