  1. I think that sound is similar to the noise my waterpump made when it died. It is hard to tell from the recording but my pump sounded like someone had chucked some nuts & bolts in a tin can and was shaking it!! How old/new is the pump? How about putting a screwdriver on the engine components and listening to the other end? It may help to pin point where the noise is coming from.
  2. Has anyone had much experience with a Bluetooth headunit? How easy/hard is it to swap over the mobile that connects to it? i.e. I've got a work and personal mobile - is it a pain to swap them over? I've got to bight the bullet and upgrade soon as my Kenwood's nob broke last week, so I can't skip tracks or browse MP3 CD's, oh and it has refused to read CR-RW's for months! Thats the last Kenwood headunit I'll buy!
  3. Digging up an old thread here!! I used Mastertechs yesterday. I got a new waterpump, 2 new rear wheel bearings and the brake fluid flushed. I was very impressed with them, felt safe leaving my car in their hands. And they use genuine VW parts. The only complaint I could give was that there were a couple of greasy fingermarks on the leather. I'd definately use them again.
  4. Velcro Strips used here also as I didn't want to start drilling holes. Works a treat!
  5. A few days ago I gave the C an oil & filter change. I also took the oppertunity to drain the coolant, flush using holts and refill. After doing the work I went for a spin and she was running great.... The next morning I left for work and things weren't so good! A leak has developed near the coolant drain plug, I assumed the plug was loose so climbed under the engine for a look - the leak is not coming from the plug. I cannot see where the leak is but it is in that area - waterpump? A tappetty kinda noise has also developed when the engine is cold. The noise increases with engine speed (it sounds a bit like a couple of ball-bearings rattling in a can which leads me to the water pump again). The noise goes away after a few minutes of running. Also when switching off the engine a squeak can be heard for a second. Ok, I'm pretty sure this is my waterpump giving up but just want to make sure I'm not missing anything obvious. Ideas anyone?
  6. I have always found Optimax a bit weak at lower revs too!
  7. Please let us know if they are any good. We need a decent VW specialist in the area!
  8. Fitted some Iridium NGK plugs. They feel better than the Bosch plugs i removed - smoother idle, more power and no more pinking at low revs. I'm not sure if its because the old plugs were past their best or if the VR prefers the NGK's but it is a nicer drive now :D
  9. Reminds me of a story I heard about one of my Dad's mates. He was driving home from the pub one night after just picking up a new car. He was on a motorway all the way home in 1st or 2nd and ended-up ruining the engine. This was quite a few years ago when drink driving was more accepted....he must have been mega pi$$ed!!
  10. Looks like he's directing the traffic - maybe the traffic lights are broken....
  11. After lowering my C I noticed that the beam seems to be too high. Because the arse isn't in the air anymore it has changed the angle of the beam. Been meaning to adjust it for ages.
  12. They had a pic of it in one of the weekend papers (think it was Driving or Motoring). The article said it was called the Jag XK. It looked like a smaller version of the XK8/XKR....but not as nice.
  13. Thanks for the comments guys. I'll definately be at the next No-Rice meet.....and possibly the next SE meet depending on the date.
  14. Thanks, luckily the stone chips and dents don't show up in the photos. I must get them sorted.....
  15. I thought it was about time I added some more pics. Used some clay bar today which worked a treat. Since the last set of photos I have lowered the car with Koni's and H&R springs and got a set of refurbed Solitudes from Guy Hartley. I have been thinking of getting a daily driver for the Winter....
  16. Looks boring to me, although i'm sure it'll be a decent car.
  17. Fitted a new set of Beru HT leads this evening. Over the last couple of weeks I have replaced the fuel filter, gearbox oil and changed the oil & oil filter.

    Magi leads

I've just bought a set of black Beru leads from AVS (http://www.vwspares.co.uk) for £77 inc vat&delivery. Unfortunately they tried to deliver today when no-one was home, so I'll be collecting from the courier tomorrow. I got this interesting info from them via email: "All the leads supplied directly by Beru only come in Black. You can only get red ones if you buy them from VW. There is no difference between the red and black ones other than the colour. If you have heard people say the Red ones are better, the difference was the later cars that had red leads had a one piece metal plug cap, rather than metal and rubber, so was less prone to damage when removing the leads. The late type 'Black' beru leads have the same one piece plug caps like the original 'Red' ones."
  19. Guy Hartley (chargedupstorm) has a 3.0 supercharged VR.
  20. Thanks. I was under the impression that the 2 filter types were for different engine revisions. I'll have to remember to take a filter with me to Stealth in future. I'm wondering if using the filter without the non-return valve could explain why the tappets sound v.noisy when the engine is cold. I'll have to see if the new filter makes a difference.
  21. Hmmm....wonder why Stealth fitted the incorrect type
  22. I'm currently half way through changing the oil in my VR. I went to the dealers this morning to buy the parts, I took a guess that I'd need the metal top oil filer with the non-return valve as that seems to be the most common type. So I've just taken the old filter out and it is the plastic top type without the non-return valve. The new filter i bought this morning with the valve fits into the filter housing nicely (with a click). My question is, how do I know what type of filter I should be using? It was last serviced at Stealth, who used the filter with the non-return valve in.....are they correct or have they made a mistake? Here is a pic from Kev showing the 2 types of filters
  23. Had mine replaced about 6 months ago. It cost me 50 quid on excess at RAC windscreens. I asked the guy how much it would have cost if I hadn't had gone through the insurance and he said something like £800 !!
