    Oil (sorry!)

They are always rattley when first started. Doesn't matter what oil you use it wont make any difference really. Use the oil from VW dealers. Synta Silver 10w 40. Its quite cheap too. I pretty sure it the tappets cos they are hydraulic and need the oil to quite them. Hence why all vr's make that noise when started especially when its really cold outside. T.
  2. cheers Jay. Have plenty of agricultural suppliers around here so shouldn't be too hard to get some that will fit. T.
  3. can I pretty much use any type of washers? T.
  4. bugger, forgot about them.
  5. PS. I now have all the parts I need to go from the 288 -> 312mm. Just have to wait about 5 months for the VR to be back on the road. :( T.
  6. Good man Mike. I was actually going to PM you. Cheers Simon
  7. Anyone know if the brake pads for the 288mm setup and the 312mm setup are the same?? Just trying to sort out brake pads and what ones I need. Cheers Simon
  8. use the flywheel then, cant be wrong. There's a wee peep hole on top of the gearbox. Need to remove the rubber bung. The '|' mark wants to be slap bang in the middle of the hole when you're using the timing strobe. T.

    my cars

    That's such a nice colour!! T.
  10. That | is the make for 6 degrees BTDC. There are two marks on the flywheel. A '0' which is for true TDC and the '|' for getting the timing spot on 6 degrees BDTC. T.
  11. get a decent sound clip phat. Cant really hear it very well T.
  12. Sounds like you did the right thing. Good/quick thinking is what makes the difference between a good driver and a very good driver. Although you aren't an excellent driver because you would have been a further distance back behind from the car in front. I.e. braking distance Good call though! :) T.
  13. argghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! Where is it to be hosted? I need to hear this beast!!! T.
  14. That's your auxiliary coolant pump. 8) T.
  15. Yeh, I was thinking having it set at 6 degrees BTDC was the safe option. I certainly hasn't made it any slower or not that I can notice. I'm just wondering how may degrees it takes to hide the timing mark out of site!? Just out of curiousity. T.
  16. Its a question for anyone who's got rather aggresive timing on their G60. I finally checked the timing on my Dad's G60. We've only had the thing nearly a year. I knew for the previous owner that it was set a little more aggresive than standard. Anyway, in checking through the peep hole at the flywheel I could not see the mark at all. So I un did the dizzy base at turn until I could see it. (AT 2500, with temp sensor disconnected it should bang in the middle, right?) So I guessing it was quite ahead of standard. I was just wondering, those who have it a few degrees more advanced if you can still see the mark? I just wondered how advanced the timing had be set. The car seems to be a bit smoother and the idle is now spot on and its still going like a train  CHeers, sorry for the warble on Simon

  21. yup, all doors are the same whatever age, electric, manual etc.
  22. you need the proper tool to do it!! You can get it from VW, if they'll sell you it. Which most dealerships wont because they want to get your custom and make you pay for them to do it. T.
