  1. Well, as I myself experienced recently, the heater hose connected to the back of the engine is prone to pin holes/splitting. A hole will allow the system pressure to be released which tends to reduce the boiling point. It will probably also be blowing off there as well as at the header. Worth a look perhaps.
  2. Hi All, Well, I've read all the exhaust posts with interest. Not sure what I want/need really. I was considering a ss system for the VR but the oe system is still in good nick, so if I did get anything it would be to store for future need. I do need to do something for the 1.8 16v (1990, no cat but 3 boxes) fairly soon though. The magazine ads (can't access much on the web) I've seen don't seem to cater for this model so am trying to get prices for oe bits from vag at present. But my main problem is that I really love the size, shape and sound (so don't want anything noisy) of the oe tailbox so want something that’s as close a match as possible if I go stainless. Will also put it on myself, so it must have the right hangers and be a proper fit – I'm not into having to gash it up. Also, the Milltek ads I've seen suggest needing to cut the rear valance – that's totally out of the question unless anyone knows different. So, all you guys with either of these types (ovals only) fitted, give me a bit of help and tell me how they compare to the oe in terms of shape, size, sound and fit. Cheers

Hi Nigel, The Alicante area I reckon - staying at a place called Oliva, just north of Denia (where I spotted the C), about mid way between Benidorm and Valencia
  5. Just thought I'd make you all jealous and let you know how much fun I've been having recently hillwalking, climbing, biking, canoeing, pub-crawling and eating too much in Spain, and been back for a whole 13 days now and am just so happy to be back at work - not. Weather was great, about 21 and sunny with just a bit of rain the last night. Posted this on car chat coz I got pix of the one C I saw out there. It's debadged but decided its a 16V after having a good nosey inside & through the grille. Also a pic of me with my knobbly knees and white hat enjoying life on top of a 'hill' near Calpe .
  6. Yeah, good article and the boy said the right things. Nice one Nick, she looked great. I was also doing my Cheshire Cat impersonation. And all this on the day I found the fuel pump fault on my 6, an overheated contact on the alarm, so got to drive it again before the programme :D I shall have to watch it again tonight The rest of the show was pretty good too, those Aussie ads are so funny - just loved the dog
  7. Red 16V in Tesco carpark in Dorchester (Dorset) 3pm last Sun 16th, XIJ 71, CCGB sticker.
  8. That's all jolly interesting. My dealer says they are not members of the scheme, so I just haggle coz they see a lot of me. I'd like to see what comes of your investigating John
  9. lol Please don't do that again I nearly wet my pants
  10. Hi Dazzy Well that's just typical of VW building them all different :) Interestingly (if you care) my valver and VR are built the same with 17mm bolts on the front and poxy allen screws on the back
  11. Dalek, OK you have removed the wheel and caliper and the disc is loose. That suggests that the small set screw that just holds the thing in position is missing - its fitted at the same distance out from the centre as the wheel bolts. There is no 'fixing' in the centre of the disc and as said above I think you are looking at the drive shaft end nut - do NOT remove this. I'm just trying to recall (forgive me I'm getting old) whether you need to remove the caliper carrier as well. Its held on the back of the hub carrier with two 17mm hex hd bolts. You might need some added leverage on a socket tommy bar to get em off coz they are quite tight. HTH
  12. Brian Don't think so m8, my '90 valver has them

    fuel relay

The one on my valver is marked 67, but the later one on my VR is 167. But the AA man attending my recent breakdown with the pump not running assures me that they are the same inside.
  14. Not an allen, what you want is a 17mm socket (or ring spanner) to shift the carrier, and a 13mm socket/ring and a 14mm (I think) open end to remove the calliper
  15. Dalek995 wrote I think what you are talkig about here is the phillips type set screw that holds the disc on to the hub. If its an old one the odds are that it has been damaged and no longer has a + for the screwdriver to fit in. Drill the head off, remove the disc then you can either remove the remains of the screw and fit a new one - or just forget about it. Best thing with the fluid is to let it out the bleed nipple when you push the piston back.

  17. Sounds like its the external pump, it hangs under the rear right floor next to the filter. Easy to get at but all the fixings will probably be corroded to b*****y. And it will sick up fuel when you dis it which you'll have to clean up
  18. Great news Chris. I was real worried when a 'funeral' was being discussed. Still, at least u can get on the forum - I've had to resort to using a pals house coz my work net has gone pants and I'm missing my forum fix :(
  19. Cheers Jim, just goes to show what I know (rather don't) about forum technicalities Spot on there Kev - even more exciting on the road I expect
  20. Well glad you survived. VAG certainly did a recall job on earlier(?) cars to fit cut off valves in the matrix pipes (engine side) in case of matrix failure. My '90 valver was called back for this. Presumably later cars had a 'better' matrix fitted so maybe don't have the cut off valves fitted; can't remember whether my VR has cut off valves on it or not and I'm nowhere near it so can't go and look.

    M4 Speed Cameras

Well cheers for that DtM. The message was from a very trusted source so I am now a bit concerned about that. Whatever, glad it's cobblers. One of my office mates was well worried today as he had been up and down there a mite snappily last w/e. :)
  22. Just got this on my e-mail. Be aware New electronic signs on the M4 were switched on on Tuesday 21st October 2003. The bad news is that they are rigged with SPECS speed cameras. SPECS is a computer-camera based system. As you go past the sign a digital camera reads your number plate. When you go past the next sign your number plate is read again. The computer knows how far apart the signs are so it can work out your average speed between the two, or three or four. The system is fully automatic and will issue a ticket without any form of human intervention. It does this for every single vehicle that passes. You will not know you’ve been caught as the cameras don’t flash. The work 24/7, 365 days a year, and theoretically, there’s absolutely no limit on the number of tickets that the system can issue. The whole section of the M4 between Theale (J12) and Membury Services (between J14 and J15) is wired both ways. The system is set to trigger a ticket at 78mph. Radar detectors will be of no use as SPECS is entirely passive, there is no radar or laser beam to detect. Please ensure that your colleagues/friends are made aware of the above.
  23. Hell's teeth  What has gone wrong with the text alignment on my last post? Any Mod want to fix it for me???
  24. Grr, still having trouble logging in. Don't take these figures as gospel, sometimes I got the decimals & sometimes not, so apologies if anyone thinks theirs should have been higher.
