  1. What oil are you using? - might be too thin A common trick is to add 1/2 a litre of ATF fluid to the engine for a couple on hundred miles before an Oil change, this seems to act like a flush
  2. Good call! - This seems to be a fairly common one on VR's and I know of people that have chaged most of the above to fix it but no no avail... not many would think of the oil pump though but it makes sense!
  3. Most if not all of that list is just general servicing / wear and tear items... These cars are now around 20 years old, best to pick and area like brakes and do a complete refurb rather than just constantly fixing stuff.
  4. How old is the fan thermoswitch mate - do you have another? That said it may just settle down, newly built engine and all that plus could be some air pockets in the system. Brakes - they only have to 'work' but rears are always close to fail if you still have the MK2 style calipers - could drive it with the handbrake slightly on to clean the discs as the rears take ages unless you have MKIV calipers.
  5. It's a firing point / knock reference sensor and should be attached to lead 4 not 1 (1 is always at the cambelt end on VW's) In a knock situation it tells the ECU what cylinder bank it is for fault logging.
  6. Yeah the Eurospec kit is a non vented setup so fairly pointless really as an upgrade although it looks better. I think John is running front calipers at the back but no idea how he did it and what he's doing about parking brake etc...
  7. £6 from VW for the fronts, rear ones are currently backordered
  8. Bit longer than that I reckon Karl - he was driving around his Blackberry 16V way before this forum existed - back in the days of the Yahoo Group!
  9. Usually it's the parcel shelf if the 2 foam stops are missing from the rear window trim.
  10. VW have changed these and the new part doesn't really look original... I try and find a MK2 in a scrappy to raid.
  11. What is the offset and bore of those wheels? If the offset is say ET40 you can fit 5mm - 10mm spacers to bring down to around ET33 which is what VW use, ET25 is the lowest you can really get away with. VW bore is 57.1mm - so if the clio bore is higher then you will need spigott rings to correct this or you get get wheel vibration. You will most likely need new wheel bolts too - becuase of length but also the bolt seat - VW use a radial seat.
  12. That's a pretty good pricer but I would try and get hold of the new ones before they are fitted and give them a coat of paint... The other option is to get your existing ones to somewhere like Big Red for a refurb but I'd say new exchange ones are the way to go if they are that old. Probably best to get a set of goodridge braided hoses while you're at it.
  13. Jim, you've put dragon green in your sig - I'm sure yours is Classic Green!
  14. I personally think VAGCOM is the way to go but there are some good handheld ones out there... Some good reviews in this months Car Mechanics magazine.
  15. Indeed it was 3 years ago exactly when I drove up there - page 5 of this thread is quite amusing!
  16. Haha - Yeah just looking at the Autobrite HD one now which works out at £50 delivered... will probably go for that I think unless anyone else has any input?
  17. Just after some advice on the best place to buy a Snow Foam Lance ?? Has anyone made there own or know of a parts supplier? - I don't mind spending cash on good products but these seem very expensive for what they are! Looking at this thread I'd be surprised if the components cost more than £20 and all these 'detailing' places charge around £50! http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/s ... hp?t=84349
  18. Yeah - other stuff needed would be loom / ecu / crash sensors etc... must be possible but not easy to DIY
  19. I reckon knackered rear wheel bearings might cause the wear above.
  20. I'd check the fuel lines and pull on them to simultate engine movement - replace if you don't know the history. The toast smell means you are having a stroke :)
  21. What car do you have?? If the glove box light isn't working either then it's fuse 16 most likely. There is some info on the fuse box cover but I would check all of them
  22. Glad you made it back ok mate and really happy you got as good one... it felt solid and planted on the road!
  23. Yep - 7mm brake key http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165469
