Anyone know the cost of rear brake discs from VW?
Supercharged replied to MonkeyVR6's topic in Suppliers Forum
Bassically you have the beam itself, then the big metal stone sheild, the stub axle and then bolts holding it on then a small cover for the bolts then the disc and bearings push onto this... Depends how far you want to go really... -
You need a Rallye ECU as it has a 1.5 Barr map sensor.

Welcome to the forum! Believe it or not it will actually be the stereo that's the problem as the fitter has connected the speed sensor wire - disconnect this and it should work fine. It's a blue wire usually with a white tracer and it needs to be insulated (not earthed)

On a VR Discs are £20 Handbrake cables are £10 Wheel bearings are £19 and ABS cages are £9 - all prices plus VAT and you will need 2 of each of those plus about £5 worth of bolts for the carrier and calipers. If you can get trade prices the discs are only £13 each, bearings £14 and handbrake cables £6.50 I'd also consider changing the stub axle bolts, dust shield and stone sheild if it's corroded badly. -
Something is wrong there, should run at 90 most of the time and hardly ever get much hotter... Maybe try a new ran fan thermoswitch although it could be just the sensor under reading with age.

Hello, it's all on ETKA so I can do a list if needed... I was running Samco's with Mikalor hose clamps but now gone back to standard hoses with the factory clamps - so much better fitting and you don't have to worry about over or under tightening. Bigger sizes are mostly 32mm, 40mm with one 47mm for the bottom rad hose

^ Just updated the above with everything I can think of... tried most off the shelf stuff now I suppose with standard brakes... Using BD and DS2500's at the moment on the TDI and they are simply awesome with standard 280 calipers (new 3 years ago), it's running 155 BHP / 325Nm now, I brake hard and they feel great, no fade whatsoever and no excessive wear on the discs after 17k miles, pads 70% worn I think. I'm using the grooved discs (you can get drilled and combo ones but not plain) and they drone under heavy braking, found it annoying at first but you get used to it - I actually like to hear them working now. I've got the S2 / Girling 60's on the G60 with VAG discs / Pagid FR - they work well but heavy old things - from what i've read the Willwoods are the way to go and give better breaking than the Ibiza Brembo setup even with 280mm discs which is great if you want to keep standard wheels on it.

Black Diamond dude - the only thing apart from Genuine VAG that seem to last at all... work very well with the DS2500's too I've tried most now, Zimmerman and EBC discs are absolute rubbish and plain Brembo / Brembo max / plain ATE / ATE power are ok but still no where near as good as the genuine ones considering they are only a quid or so cheaper. Pads wise Genuine VW / Pagid / ATE / TRW / Ferrodo are much of a muchness and the only upgrade I'd bother with now (as you can't get Pagid FR) are the Ferrodo DS2500's which are awesome but more expensive and aggressive on discs. Avoid EBC and Halfords own brand pads (crap feel and fall apart if heated up too much) and MIntex standard and eXtreme - seem to have too much metal in them and squeel / squeek.
-
Deffo stick to standard VW for the discs - the grey coating stops them corroding like others and they are only a couple of quid more than pattern ones. Pads don't really matter at the back imo but if your getting the MK4's then get genuine ones again with the adhesive backings - late MK3 GTI though, not MK4
-
Yeah it's actually a machine belt but as Toadie says any decent belt place should be able to source one - maybe look for a Gates or Continental dealer... suprised G-werks can no longer supply!
-
I tell a lie - I have a VW kit on my desk in front of me and that parts the same... Yeah GKN CV joints are ok but I would always stick with genuine for the boots - especially on the VR6 / 8 V as you get the new plastic MKV type now.
-
Not easily, the pedals are different.. I really would just buy a new one, no point in fitting second hand parts for something so critical!
-
Clutch kit etc will be about £70 - £100 depending on what you buy then 3 - 4 hours labour ish
-
VW should have these in stock - really not worth the risk using pattern parts
-
They are not engine specific but there are 2 different types as they change on chassis If it looks the same then it will fit (the later ones are short and stubby so easy to tell)
-
Very near to peddle mate - you'll see it
-
bloody hell! - Yes make sure you buy genuine too, ask for a cambelt kit if they do one for the 16V as it will be cheaper.
-
There is an anti squeel thing that fits inside the piston itself and just the spring things on the pads need to be under the caliper body - I'm sure they are fine but seen some mis-fitted in the past
-
Well, 1000 is atmosphere so could be a leak somewhere but the gauge your using seems to indicate correctly... What about plugging that gauge in inside the car - T off the nylon pipe that goes to the back of the clocks.
-
It's unlikely but could do I suppose if very old... must be binding in some way... You sure everything (clips etc) are in place and seated correctly, nothing bent or distorted...
-
Good work Gertrude, we knew you had it in ya!
-
Welcome to the forum, Did you clean the sliding surfaces and re-grease? Correct pads? Unlikely to be both calipers seized although maybe very old fluid being pushed back into the housing could maybe cause this... I think you need to jack the car up asap and see if they are binding.
-
Yeah, think it should so you're probably right, worth checking the sensor first though... (just wanted to check you were looking at the right thing)
-
Sure there should only be two even with air con - do you have air con? The new flanges from VW now have 3 ports so you buy a blanking plug with it - sounds like it was bought without one and an old sensor was used instead... Have you tried reading the resistance of the 2 pins on the black sensor?
-
Mate - just watch that brake line isn't going to get crimped by the chassis - it might not be but it looks routed wrong from here... It was like that on my TDI, luckily Vince at Stealth spotted it as I took it up there a few days after getting the car - could have been nasty!
