  1. Hi, In the middle of doing rear discs and pads atm on my TDI - got it all stripped down and one of the wheel bearings (1 year old GSF w4nk) basically fell apart and the other one had way too much play... I am having problems with the side that nearly fell apart - the inside pad had delaminated and also written off the disc (they needed changing tho) - there is some light scoring to the part of the stub axle nearest to the thread for the nut... is this ok? I think I can get away with it... But my main worry is, on this side again, there was no metal sheild over the stub axle bolts, I have 2 spares but one i have already damaged trying to get it on becuase of corrosion i think and after cleaning it the second one is very tight and looks like it will bend if i use any more force... Are these needed?? they seem to sit betwween the axle and the plastic dust sheild of the bearing so i think they are... If i miss it out again will the bearing not have anything to sit against? - maybe why the first one failed so badly? - Bit miffed as these bearings were fitted by Stealth and also one of the carrier/pad clips on the same side was also not present - Vince did worn me at the time that the wheel bearings would not last but it was all they could get (I didn't order them, just they found the Febi ones fitted 2 years before (!!) were shot when coing a MK4 rear caliper upgrade... The part I am on about is 'cover ring' in the Bentley and the collar should be 9.5mm away from the splash sheild...
  2. I had a car follow me home last night night, saw it early on and sat exactly on the speed limit all the way - for about 4 miles tho this guy sat about 4 metres from my bumper, when I turned off he just carried on - t055er!
  3. Were the rear discs and bearings changed? - Worth checking the play in the bearings - if jap ones from GSF were used then they only last about 6 months tops!! You may have got some rust down between the disc and carrier if the bearings are loose...
  4. Part of the head i'm afraid...
  5. New ones are fine - problems usually arise after cleaning and re-oiling... ie it's very easy to spray too much on...
  6. Good man and excellent post - it's good when people post up things like that however embarassing as it will help others trouble-shooting problems in the future! Should run like a dream now and hopefully give better MPG!
  7. Yeah thinking about it -40 means open circuit so most likely a dead sensor but worth checking some idiot garage / bodyshop hasn't connected it to the fog light plug... seriously, check both front fogs work!
  8. It's in the lower part of the front bumper - left hand side as you look at the car May be unplugged...
  9. Sounds like the above problem could be a sticky throttle butterfly - worth blasting out with carb cleaner!
  10. White lithium grease spray is good stuff anf very similar to what VW use on locks etc when sevicing... On the throttle cable tho I just use some oil (usually off the dipstick) to lube where it goes round the butterfly, as for the rest of the cable you can't do much as it's sleeved, i'd say if it's sticking then change it for the sake of £20 - half the 2nd hand Corrado's i've driven when looking to buy have suffered from sticky throttle cables - changing it makes one hell of a difference!
  11. Yeah - I agree Yan, if you spend say a grand or 5 on an engine then a couple of hundred quids worth of oil and filters is nothing... Maybe worth buying a metalnerd magnetic sump plug too!
  12. Yeah, they keep it instock - fairly standard VAC hose I think - about £4 a mtr
  13. ..that is why i'm having problems sleeping recently!
  14. LOL, yeah I know it's not the deal of the century but it's better than a slap in the face from a wet toad...
  15. Becuase it's the only way to be sure that the rings bed in properly! Not sure about the gains but I know there were alot of MK2 GTi's that were fast and some that were quicker - one 16v I drove that always put out high figures was originally a demonstrator - maybe the engine was so strong becuase of the way it was driven early in it's life?
  16. LOL, Yes Yan... 19.99 (or £25 + P&P on eBay  ) - they are not as good as the old 'pound thru' ones but i have those anyway... Also picked up one of those Tool chest trays in 1/2" drive for £29.99 - half price but missing rathchet, gonna get a Snap-on one to replace it 8) Really impressed with them today! - reason I went in was my 1 year old calcium battery appeared to be leaking acid from the breather, they bought out a Bosch tested and did a full test on it and the car including ripple test to check it was not being overcharged etc, with the battery off the car it came up as 'unserviceable' even tho it's been starting the diesel engine first turn fine so they swapped it, didn't need receipt and i've got another 4 years warranty from today as the date is on the battery, also gave me a print out of the test results and a free length of 5/8 heater hose to replace a pipe thats been slightly damaged by the acid leak
  17. Halfords are doing a free Pro Screwdriver set (worth £19.99) with purchases of 5ltr Halfords branded Semi-Synth oil (made by Comma) 10-40 is £19.99 15-40 is £16.66 Seems a good deal and even cheaper if you have a trade card!
  18. Yeah, i've got an Audi one - works fine, was about £14 iirc...
  19. You just need a slightly shorter belt...
  20. 7 pins... could be heatewd seat switch or maybe ABS?? What car is it and what lights / switches have you got in the middle
  21. Might be worth chopping that for testing purposes, can't see it doing any harm and you have a soldering iron...
  22. Check the throttle cable first matey...
  23. Yeah Switch I reckon, dipped beam should come on at the second stage of the dash switch... Worth checking any relays in the engine bay before you purchase but it's a common fault - switch is about £40 from GPC
