always been a fan of the Mk2 GTi and quite like the Mk1 but never really have thought much of the Mk3 til lately.........especially since i first seen ess_three's "peach" of a 16v GTi anniversary.........anyway i can't believe how cheap the Mk3 can be had for these days......ok its a bit "dumpy and bloated" and the 8v ain't exactly the last word in speed but friends of mine have just recently picked up a decent looking M-reg FSH 16v 5dr GTi(141k miles tho) for just over £1.5k   and have just fitted the (AAA) 2.8 VR6 lump into it over the weekend all in all for just about £2k inc purchase of the car so just some minor fettling to the sides and the wheels refurbed and they will have one tidy Golf VR6 GTi conversion anyway anyone else warming to the Mk3 Golf or is it just my old-age showing
-
the joys of C-ownership then

d'oh........of course the galaxy V6 will have one too..........great thinking corradovr6sc
-
then again if it goes for not much more than it is at the moment it might be worth taking the risk.................also(i would imagine that you realise this btw)when most cars even our(beloved) C's get to a certain age and "book" value some owners will either DIY the servicing or get mechanics to do "cashers" on them so there is no "documented" proof of any sort of servicing etc
-
i would imagine everything is possible  but i would still budget on a new one...........DIY sealing it should really on be a short term measure til you can afford to buy the part IMHO.........if mine wasn't covered by the warranty i had i would have bit the bullet :( ......afterall thats one part of the VR6 engine that you want to be in tip-top condition
-
dunno about problem 1 but my aux coolant pump also had a slight leak......would pop the bonnet and find a small puddle on top of the G/box.....luckily for me my car was still under the used car warranty that i got when i bought it and this was covered.....otherwise your looking at approx £114+vat and 30 mins fitting
-
pookyvr6 i hope you've also had the suspension geometry done properly too........if you have'nt then get it done asap and then see how good it is
-
mine did it once in a blue moon like maybe 3 or 4 times since i've owned it(aug01 >)especially after a good hard drive approaching junctions/roud-a-bouts etc........anyway i always put it down to driver error as i mentioned its only happened once in a blue moon and sn't/wasn't a regular fault........but after having replaced my fuel pump last week perhaps its maybe a sign of the fuel pump getting tempremental :?
-
pretty sure there will be the early interior on some(if not all)of the 92 SLC's......this maybe explains why there could be a bit of a price difference between a 92 SLC and a 93 SLC

here's one i posted earlier this year  as for things to look out for(in no order btw) 1)make sure that the oil level is at/near the max and is relatively clean.......much lower points to careless ownership 2)it might sound a tiny bit tappetty(could be down to too thin an oil being used) and also have a very slight uneven idle this is normal, though through the rev-range it should be silky smooth and refined 3)make sure the spoiler rises at either 40/45mph(early cars) or 56mph(later cars)and that it can also be raised manually 4)make sure all the other electrics work too 5)check that there is no oil mixing with the water in the expansion tank....if it is it could be either the oil/water heat exchanger(£40ish part + fitting)or worse the h/gasket(£200++) also check the oil-filler cap...though don't automatically think that if there is a slight mayo on it that the h/gasket's failed as it could just as easily be condensation 6)all vr6's have abs fitted.....make sure that the abs light goes off within seconds of starting the car...if there is no abs light fitted or it doesn't go off then this points to either an expensive fault or that the abs has been removed 7)make sure the s/roof opens and closes without twisting as this can be quite expensive to fix 8)make sure that the tyres are wearing evenly if not this points to the steering geometry being out and could also be an expensive suspension problem 9)door handles are prone to breaking and can be expensive to fix....one of the signs is a stiff handle when opening the door NBthe VR6 has a timing chain as opposed to a timing belt.......and there is no recommended interval for changing this......though if there is clutch or headwork being done some people just bite the bullet and get this changed at the same time as it saves a bit on labour thats all from the top of my head it might be an idea getting a vw-dealer or specialist to inspect it is so that they can also check the dtc's(aka fault codes) with the vag-com software............as these can be expensive to fix and can cause all sorts of future problems hth

"i aint going on no plane crazy fool!"

just wondering if anyone on here happens to own an aqua blue C VR6 with the reg no K738 GNH......if yes did they know it was performance car magazine's long term car?
-
it probably is........going by the amount that have had their ones go in recent weeks.....inc me :( must be all this cold weather taking its toll on them  one other thing tho.....although its not really fuel related as such but might be causing you some grief.......have you checked all the other simple stuff like plugs/leads/dizzy cap/rotor arm etc
-
have you changed the fuel filter too????......
-
oh no struan..........not more shiny bits!  ........hopefully you won't have any hassle with them like the battery cover  say no more  when do you get your C back from Star-Performance???? or have you got it back already??? i'll call you the daddy if you get the "picky" bits sorted this year btw

Thanks for the offer PhatVR^ but i want to keep it original if possible. Im going to try and speak to MJ interior if i can get a number- probably going to cost a kidney though i exspect  - are MJ quite exspensive? + ive heard of them before but do you chaps know where in the country they are? they might be pricier than some other trimmers but i've seen first-hand the quality of the work that they do(ess three on this forum used them to 1/2 leather some mk4 recaro's into his mk3 gti anniversary totally excellent job it was too) and i wouldn't hesitate using them......anyway i think they are in shipley near bradford here's a number i have for them......027453370......ask for junior or richard they will be able to help you out......as apart from being very high quality trimmers they are both VW enthusiasts too
-
very true........mine is still a relative youngster miles-wise(63k at present) though i seem to be clocking them up a bit too much for my liking......i bought it at 5 1/2 years old with only 38k miles on it........
-
you also might be wise to get the fuel filter(about £10 for the filter) changed and also have the brake fluid changed(ideally this is a bi-annual thing).....if i were you i would also check the serpentine belt(if its got any cracks change it asap) as although they don't "get changed" til about 60k miles its perhaps a wise move getting this done at the same time so that it don't leave you stranded at the most awkward of times
-
you should also try MJ-interiors near bradford......as they seem to be able to source quite a bit of rare cloth for seats as for rarity i suppose they were quite a rare(and expensive option new)though one of my mate's had the factory-fitted electric recaro's in his J-plate 1.8 16v
-
thats my whole point.....by all means buy a storm if thats what you must have.........(i was lucky enough to get my stormfor VR6 money  )but there are a lot better specc'd VR's out there.........though as i 've always said i wouldn't change mine for the world
-
blimey!!!........someone had fun putting all that info together  see where you're coming from  ..........the only thing tho is that both you and i have had more than 15% losses on different rolling roads(all mine bar 1 have been done at Star-performance) and as the power at the wheels figure is what is the more "real-life" figures to use as that is in essence what is being measured directly.....does this mean that your flywheel figure is out then???........or am i having a blonde moment :?
-
classic green is a pearlescent whilst AFAIK dragon green is only a metalic...........
-
nice figures you've got there...........though i think 15% transmission loss is a bit of an underestimate even for FWD i'm sure its nearer 20-25% transmission losses for FWD.......all my RR figures have shown between 150-155bhp at the wheels and approx 190-195bhp at the flywheel

ideally tony they should be serviced once a year even if there has been only 6k miles since it was last serviced as for oil.......synta semi-synthetic isn't fully synthetic(as i'm sure you're well aware of  ) so it would/should be ok to use it if it has never had fully-synthetic oil in before........a lot of people on the forum swear by the stuff......i myself use the synta-gold fully-synthetic just purely for the fact that mine has had it in it since day 1 and its not exactly the dearest of fully-synthetic oils either......though because it is a bit thinner than the synta silver there is a bit more oil consumption as for oil-filters you won't go wrong with VW-dealer supplied ones...though i have heard that it is MANN oil-filters that VW use......at the end of the day its only going to be a very small saving you'd make sourcing them elsewhere air-filters i use a K&N panel filter in mine and have used it since May 02 without any problems(touch wood  ) plugs......NGK's seemingly are the only ones able to cope with the heat generated by the VR.....be careful where you get them from as my local dealer was wanting £20 per plug  when i first enquired about them....i eventually bought them from my local halfords for £30 for all 6......though i think the VW dealers do sell them cheaper than that now :? as for coolant........if you are changing from G-11 to G-12 you will also have to make sure that you have TOTALLY flushed out any and all traces of the G-11....as G-11 and G-12 will gell up inside if they mix together......though there is G-12+ which is meant to be ok to mix with the others as for the costs etc best thing to do is join the VWCCGB and then you should be able to get 10% discount on all those items from your local VW-dealer
