  1. In that case, one of the drive cogs inside the speedo has come off it's shaft... this is quite common on higher milage (over 100K miles) VWs which used this kind of speedo/odometer... You need to take it out, strip it down and superglue the cog back on again... Good news is that it should be nice and cheap to do if you do it yourself and that it's not rocket science to do it either... 8)
  2. the autoglym engine cleaner is also VERY good... 8)
  3. the sagging is partially an illusion caused by the humped bonnets... you'll notice that on the earlier dipped bonnets the sag isn't as noticable... :|
  4. yup, GSF or ECP should do... The housings tend to break as you tighten them back up again... which normally results in lots of loud noises of the sweary type...
  5. no need, you're spot on as normal... 8) Sorry mate, I know precisely dick about G laders.....but from memory working on Supercharged's G60, you have to take a the PAS bracketry off to get at the thermostat housing....and I *think* some of the Glader bits too....a bit of a chore in other words! Thermostat can be changed WITHOUT removing the waterpump or P/S bracketry, but it's a bit of a tw@.... easiest way of doing it (that I've done anyway) is to drop the lower bracket of the P/S pump out of the way and then you should be able to remove the plastic thermostat housing and swap the thermostat over... Make sure you have a spare thermostat housing as well as the stat and an O ring too as you'll probably find that it'll break if you don't have one handy!  *edit* feck! missed page 2...  Charger noise that dissapears when you've got the thermostat out?!? Sounds like a noisy waterpump to me then... You sure it's coming from the charger? touch the point of a screwdriver onto the casing and place your ear on the handle to use it as a stethoscope and try and find where on the charger the noise is coming from... ;)
  6. kasman21, has your instrument cluster got 1 LCD display or 2? ie. an LCD in the temp/petrol gauge AND one in the speedo, or have you got mechanical numbers on the milage counter in the speedo?
  7. 8) Glad I could help... 8)
  8. ALMOST got sunburnt in the process of thrashing the nuts off my car down at Santa Pod and finding out that my Lambda sensor is dead and my timing needs re-setting... Then sat in traffic for 4 hours on the way home...
  9. 'lo to all who were at Santa Pod yesterday... sorry if I didn't get time to chat to you as much as I'd have liked to... 8)

    Stealth

Yup, you're probably thinking about the clip I posted up when I was getting her mapped with her coughing, banging and popping in all directions when the earth went on the laptop's connection to the ECU meaning that the map being sent to the ECU from the laptop suddenly became noise rather than a map! I've run my cars on several rolling roads now and never had a problem... The worst I saw was at stealth where, as Jim says, he popped a boost hose off.... no damage caused just a bit of a bang and loss of power... The guys who operate the rolling roads know what they're doing and don't thrash the cars... when they stop making any more power, they don't take 'em any higher up the rev range 'cos there's no point... 8)
  11. Hey, if we're on about sillyness in ownership now, my MKI has had 18 owners.... and I've owned it since 1995!  I reckon that every man and his dog's probably been in it around the Manchester area I bought it from!
  12. the golf G60 also has a bigger radiator which'll help keep the temps down... Stick in a remote oil cooler and your temps will drop massively... My water temps over the last week have been at around a max of 90 with my oil just touching 110 when I was giving her a real caining to make sure everything was tight! ;)
  13. h100vw, yup, that's how I found out that the 110K miles on J-DUB was actually 235K! Wasn't too happy about that at the time... :(
  14. I've always found that my G60 will take around about 4.25 litres from a hot oil change (oil is hot before draining it)... That's gone up by about 0.5l since I added the Mocal oil cooler which I have to top up after getting the car upto above 90degrees oil temp...
  15. 162,000 on the way to work the other day... that's 11,000 since I bought the car in late January... Glad that the engine's only got 600 miles on it since the most recent rebuild though!
  16. ah, just a quick thought... if you're adding one of these to the linkage, get someone to go through the gears with the engine off while you watch inside the engine bay after you've fitted the weight... you may find that you need to re-arrange your main earth strap and possibly the jubilee clips on the P/S pipe as they may catch on the weight, especially going into 4th... ;)
  17. parts were still available from VAG as of last month... oh, and you don't need the square nut, you can re-use the one that's already on your car... ;) *goes off to enjoy his nice gearchange... *
  18. stick the external oil cooler in and your water temps will drop 10 to 20 degrees and your oil temp won't go much over 90... ;) Also, check the voltage you're getting at the fan motor (bridge the thermo switch connector) 'cos the loom for the fans does the same as the headlamps and looses a lot of power causing your fan to spin slower than it's designed to thus upping the temps somewhat... On J-DUB I added in 2 relays to give me full voltage back at the fan again for both speeds and it dropped the temps by a few degrees... 8)
  19. right, seeing as this is a VR, I'll back out and leave you in the more-than-capable hands of Kev, smarkham 'cos I know bugger all about costs on VR6s...
  20. good to hear 8) (can I say "told you so?!? )
  21. which engine? If that's a 4 cylinder version they're taking the p1ss... if it's a 6 cylinder, that's still expensive...
  22. moved to engine bay seeing as the wiper motor lives under the bonnet...
  23. build a silly G60 engine for it then you're never gonna get VR6 envy again!
  24. I've had to delete 2 copies of this thread which seem to have been created during yesterdays oddities with the server... Sorry if you've lost any replies... 8)
  25. there's a spare room in my tent at E38 too... 8) (as long as you don't snore!  )
