Wish I had it on my Golf driver.... I'm sick of spinning the damn thing on ice on my local B roads!

Ultimate enbarrasment, and 16v (ina mk1)engine question
Henny replied to andycowuk's topic in Suppliers Forum
yeah, we had an hour long MSN session about this last night, and, after agueing for ages, we realised that we were arguing the same point, just looking from different angles!   We're both pretty sure that the bearings in the dizzy are knackered making the rotor arm run not true so making the wear as described... 8) -
300 Miles(amended) / Litre(of engine oil that is)

Good recovery!  -
Very nice... 8) Do you have a front on shot of the car? I really like those side skirts, which make are they?
-
Very good... 8) I like that a lot... I don't like what it makes my car say though... Click to be slightly scared... :?

That really sounds like an ISV (Idle Stabiliation Valve) problem... I had a 1.8 16V (KR) engine in my first 'rado (and in my MKI golf, but that's a different story! ) and that would cause this kind of problem.... Have a search for ISV, there's loads of posts on here (it's a common problem  ) and see if that sorts it out... OR: You could have a sticky throttle cable... :? That would give the weird idle problems, but probably wouldn't cause the acceleration hesitation that you describe, unless it's REALLY sticky... :? Either way, that should give you something to go on... The KR (1.8 16V) engine is a rock and shouldn't give you any hassles if you treat it right... Welcome to the forum by the way... Get ready to learn more than you probably ever wanted to!  8)

That's precisely why I was looking at it... 8) I don't give a damn what other people think of my system from outside the car... I don't listen to it from out there! I want something practical (oh, God! shoot me now, I said the "P" word!!!  ) that sounds good inside the car when I'm driving it to and from work... 8) My home stereo (at least the one that I spent a lot of money on!) has 3 Infinity reference speakers up front, and a pair of Wharfedales at the rear... I really rate the Harman group speakers (Infinity, JBL, Harman-Kardon and others I can't remember at this time in the morning!) which is why I went for all JBL in my 'rado... They may not be to everyones tastes, but I like them and that's what counts to me... 8) Working in the field I work in has taught me that you really shouldn't bow down to opinion on sounds and the like... Go for what sounds good to you, you're the only person that has ears like yours and who knows what sounds good to you.... 8)

yeah, I was watching them, but decided that my 'rado's better off without the extra weight for now...

Yeah, I forgot to mention the 12" jenson sub in the rockford box with the bridged 4X 150 watt amp driving it that's sat in the boot...  Adds all the THUMP that you need, and then some! I'm only using 2 channels bridged and it's turned nearly all the way down! :? I think that the amp may be a bit of overkill, but it, like the sub and box, were cheap, so, hey, what could I do?!?   I think I may dump the sub, box and amp and go with something like a bass link just for space and ease reasons... 8) It's definately something you need to consider when you are using standard fit speakers as they just can't generate the bass frequencies needed for most music tastes due to their small sizes. :?
-
YAY! Success! 8) Good for you! :D I'll lock this one up then... 8)
-
Yup, Sony, Alpine, Infinity, JBL, Pioneer, Kenwood etc etc etc all do standard fit speakers for the rear shelf supports... They're 6x4 inch as standard. I've got JBL all round in mine with components up front with the tweaters mounted into the front dash grilles... Lots of people here have similar set ups and just about all agree that it's difficult to go wrong going down this path... 8) A lot of people here have the Focal range and rate them very highly... I've not heard these yet so I can't comment... I suppose it all depends on how much you do or don't want to spend... 8) Oh, and just for reference, the front doors are 5+1/4 inch and the dash ones are around about a 10cm... Some Corrados had tweeters and door speakers from the factory, some just a mid/tweet in the dash...

Amen to that!   8) I just wanna get into my car and DRIVE it... 8) -
Tappets on a 16V aren't that bad, except you do have to buy 16 of the little sods... :? Euro list 'em at £6.50 each... £104 per set... While you're in there, change the cam drive chain as well and the cam belt + tensioner.... 8) The worst bit of the job's the labour as you've got to take the inlet manifold off, both cams out (hence may as well do cam belt + chain while you're at it)... It's not a massively difficult job, just time consuming... :? What oil are you using in it? It may be worth sticking in a change of a slightly thicker oil...
-
Nope, not a blonde moment... Well spotted... 8) 1.8 16Vs didn't have a cat, so won't have a de-cat pipe... :? odd... :?
-
Go back to page 3.... 225K and counting...  Just about to fit the new engine... 8)

No idea... :? Mine will lock with the engine running (or at least, it would when it had an engine! ) Obviously that was locking from the key, as trying to lock it from the alarm won't do anything 'cos the alarm is wired into the ignition live so that it knows when the engine is running so you can't immobilise the car by accident while driving...

Ultimate enbarrasment, and 16v (ina mk1)engine question
Henny replied to andycowuk's topic in Suppliers Forum
If the rotor was actually HITTING the cap, then it sounds like the bearings in the dizzy have gone... The contacts on a dizzy cap do wear down with ages due to the ark of the spark across the small gap between the rotor arm's terminal and the contacts on the cap... This is normal and not a lot to be worried about unless it's done it over a very short period of time... :? The 1.1 205 cap should help with the clearance issues as it's only about 2/3 the length of a normal cap and then doesn't have the leads on top of that length 'cos it's side exit.... 8) Good luck! 8) -
Any ideas what it was in the end? Glad it's working anyway.... 8)
-
That sounds like the voice of experience! :? I'd never thought about that, but they'd make a hell of a mess if you knocked the top off one with the engine running... :?
-
Won't be the heat exchanger... That throws the oil into the water and blows the top off the expansion tank if the oil part of it goes... :? Guess who's had one of them go?!? Sounds to me like it's one of the oil pipes to/from the charger either come loose or broken... it's high pressure and will throw oil in all sorts of directions especially when it hits the fan and pulleys... If it was still running OK, then I'd hazzard a guess that the charger hasn't gone bang...

Nah, I would imagine that a lot of alloy places have stuff like that in stock... In fact, Google " "spigot ring" + "OZ" " and you'll get a place that sells 'em! 8) You do need them though, as otherwise your wheel may be slightly off center which will cause a vibration that will damage your suspension, possibly the wheel as well which could cause it to come loose and even come off! Not one to mess about with for the sake of a couple of quid....
-
As long as the Offset and PCDs are the same, the only thing you need to do is to buy some plastic spiggot rings (I'm pretty sure they're called that anyway :? )... These are basically a spacer that makes the centers fit properly ensuring that the wheels are dead center on the hub... Most alloy wheel retailers will have them, and they aren't expensive... 8) As for repainting wheels, I have no idea 'cos I'm a northerner...

There's a vacuum hose onto the back of the clocks that sometimes comes off giving you the 99.9 reading... It may also be a loose/leaking vacuum hose in the engine bay somewhere... Time to check 'em all out!  Good luck!
