guys, you're all missing the BIG thing that's missing from that photo.... ... where's the top of the steering wheel?!? You can see the boss, but the top of the wheel's not on the shot... either it's got a truck steering wheel, or that's been tatty-chopped... ;)

rmn, they aren't MKI GTI suspension, MKIs had wishbones... they're based on MKI POLO suspension... Dunno about the brakes though, but the ones I test drove before deciding to buy J-DUB were just bloody scarey on the handling and brakes side of things... :|

I've given up on the car and have been taking the train into work for the last 2 days... On my way home on Monday I normally fill up with petrol for the week... After driving past 11 petrol stations on my way home this week, I gave up 'cos they all had closed due to having no fuel left except for 2 which had HUGE queues... My local Shell garage (about 300yards down the road) had enormous queues and has managed to sell out again this morning... The protest that was predicted at the Cheshire refinery DID start this morning.... . . . . . . . . . ...two people were there protesting... no tankers were stopped or even delayed by the protest... To anyone who's panic buying... QUIT IT YOU PILLOCKS...  The average amount people were putting into their cars at my local garage dropped from well over £20 to around £9 over the last couple of days as every muppet and their dog decided to fill the car to the brim... even if that meant queueing for 30 to 90 minutes beforehand...

g-man, I know you're not joking mate, it just sounds totally silly to give car part rebuilding instructions which include a gas mark setting! -
bummer dude.... don't worry about it, it'll get sorted... 8) Hell, just look at my track record with my cars/engines and the run of bad luck I've had with mine to make you feel better... the head gasket that's sat on my kitchen table will be the 5th I've had to put into one of my 2 corrados in the last 3 years and I only managed 500 miles with J-DUB running perfectly before she got written off after spending 10K+ on her... It'll get done, and once you actually get to drive it and enjoy it again, you'll remember why you got motivated again... 8)

An ECU won't damage a car (there's only wires and a relay there) where as a damaged wire/ relay can fry an ECU... ;)

Yup, formerly John Collins... :? So, when you see a leggy blonde getting out of a tuned up Ford Cosworth of some description around the Congleton area, take a second look...

g-man, sometimes even I'm not sure if you're taking the p!ss with your answers or if you're deadly serious... :notworthy: I'm not even gonna ask how you found that one out... or what your missus thinks about your baking! -
...hence my offer to bring my G60 and a spare ECU over as well as my scope, timing lamp and multimeter... ;)

coolrado, they're still talking crap mate... If they tried to close the bonnet with the stay up, it wouldn't have damaged the bonnet there as they bend out forwards from the car (look at the angle they are at when the bonnet is propped up.) That's been caused by some muppet leaving something on top of the engine and dropping the bonnet down from a height to shut it... Their excuse doesn't explain the mallet or the rags shoved in the fan either though. Personally, I'd be talking straight to RAC headquarters and to trading standards. They are utterly liable and as such HAVE to put you back into the situation you were in before they damaged the car, whatever the cost is. Take 'em to the cleaners, and don't forget that you are well within your rights to claim for a hire car of a similar size while your car is off the road... ;) Unfortunately early bonnets ARE obsolete from VW (I asked earlier this year when I got my Grey G60 as I wanted to put an early bonnet back on it) so you're looking at either getting a good second hand one, or getting the hump... :(

how about a set of 9.5x17 Borbet Ts just to be a little different? clicky!
-
Borbet As are still available from the new importers, but I don't know about the stud patterns... 8) http://www.borbetwheels.co.uk/borbeta.htm They used to be imported by Scotford, and they may have some left in stock if you can get hold of 'em... 8) *edit* ooh, it appears that Scotford DO still import Borbet and Kamei kit http://www.scotford.com/ 8)

With less than 10,000 sold in the UK? Haynes would never have made any money on it... :(

GIXXERUK, or any spares for the car!

Me? I swore a LOT! I snapped the head off one of my bumper bolts while doing the engine swap into H-YYU which made life difficult to say the least... I soaked the bolts in plusgas 3 or 4 times over a few hours while I stripped everything else off the engine I could and then tried to undo them again after I found that they were WELL tight and had snapped the head off the first one. I also used a VERY long bar with a GOOD quality socket which I'd hammered on to make sure it wasn't gonna slip and screw up the heads... This worked on 3 of 'em, but the first one had sheared as soon as I put some torque on it... I had to drop the front subframe off the car with the bumper still in place (not easy, but it is do-able) then get my mini-blowtorch onto the bolt and a GOOD quality set of maul grips onto the headless bolt with a bar on their handles to get some swing on 'em... 45 minutes later I had a headless bolt sat on the floor, several sore muscles and some skinned knuckles... Take it nice and slow and don't try to rush the bolts out else you'll end up snapping 'em... Personally, I'd get one of those mini-blowtorches and slam some heat into the bolt for a few minutes, then smack it with a hammer a couple of times, then get a good socket and a LONG bar on it to try and get 'em out... 8) Good luck! Oh, and use some good quality stainless steel bolts with washers and a drop of threadlock to put it back together again!

Riley, call me you muppet... I've a spare ECU, spare CO pot, spare vac hose, spare coil etc etc etc.. that we can bung on it (or onto mine) to check they're working OK... Only thing is, you'll have to wait until I can get some fuel to put in my car 'cos it's stranded at home at the moment and the local petrol station hasn't got any fuel left due to all these arseholes panic buying...
-
ooh, hadn't thought of that Dinkus... I've got: 1/2 a tank of optimax that's been sat for 11months in J-DUB 1/4 a tank of shell 95 ron that's been sat for 18 months in my MKII Golf and 1/4 a tank of unleaded in my MKI 16V that's been sat for over 7 years Wonder how well my 1940cc G60 will run on that little lot?!? :cuckoo:

There's a guy in Congleton (well, I say Guy, he's now a lady... :? ) who owns a tuning company ( Collins Performance motorsport ) and owns 2 or 3 RS200s... I've been in the black one which they have which only has 400+ BHP and is only a little nippy.... ;)

Anyone want to send me some petrol? My car is stranded at home with just about enough fuel to get to my local petrol station which hasn't got any fuel at the moment, so I've had to come to work on the train 'cos of all the muppets panic buying.... Trust me to normally fill up on a Monday night and to having to leave work late last night... Still, at least I got to doze on the train safe in the knowledge I wasn't gonna crash! I drove past 11 petrol stations on the way home last night, only one of them had any fuel left, and there was a 2/3mile long queue ouside it waiting to fuel up! Madness... It's been on the local news that there were at least 2 fights at local stations due to people alledgedly queue jumping... WTF is going on in this country?!?

TomB, I know that one mate... (only it's a K and needs to be platinum...) Golf GTD engine can be modded quite well and is a well strong block... there's one nutter who has a white one that's kicking out around 200BHP and scares people at the Pod regularly! He says it still gives good fuel consumption most of the time too!

yup, there should be a small plastic tray that sits over the right hand side of the scuttle panel (as you look from the front of the car) which goes over the heater fan intake. If this is missing, then when you hit a large puddle the water can come in through the fan and hit the matrix causing the car to steam up...

it could also be the oil cooler that's leaking internally if it's one of the aluminium water cooler ones which sits above the oil filter. Change the oil cooler before you do the head gasket and see if that cures it as it's a hell of a lot easier and cheaper to do than taking the head off! ;)
