Gearbox Choice in 2.8 24v - CCM or Corrado Box with Peloquin LSD
coullstar replied to E2-SAW's topic in Drivetrain
Pretty much yep that's the case. -
You might be okay but Id see if you can change them for 205's. 215 will slow the acceleration down a little more as well but as you say will be slightly more comfortable.

UK VR boxes are pretty much all the same ratios I believe with a few different codes. None of the UK ones came with 3.68 or similar FD as far as I know. -

G60 boxes have them, and if you get one change the 3rd gear for the G60's as well as its better. Basically the best OEM mistmatch box is a VR6 with 3.68FD and G60 3rd gear. OR there is the 4motion boxes but they require different shafts etc etc or a V5 Golf gearbox also works I think. In fact theres a guy on VR6oc selling a V5 box I think that would maybe suit a track car. -
Generally for 17's people use 205. If you look at the tyre calculator you should compare to a 205/50/15 as that's the std tyre size. 205/40/17 is slighty bigger than that IIRC.

From the trackdays Ive done at Knockhill I had a 3.68FD in the VRT and it was good and wouldn't get near topping out. When I went back with the current std car with std box I realized how long geared the std box is. Basically only used 2nd and 3rd IIRC. I would try and get a 3.68FD at a minimum for a track car but saying that the 24v torque curve might change that as the 12v needs to be at or above 4krpm. I had speaking to the guy that had the box you bought as I was told it had the shorter FD but seems not. Might be worth trying first as you will be able to sell it on afterwards quite easily if it doesn't suit the car. -
Those RS ones do suit the Corrado. I would stick with 205/40 myself to keep it as close to original rolling radius.

Jeeso, taking mine off the car tomorrow if that's what they go for!

I agree to an extent however there are plenty of replica wheels that are acceptable in terms of quality. They wont be as good as the likes of BBS or OZ but then Ive seen them crack and buckle before as well. With and size seems to have a bearing on it as well. If your current wheels are good quality then you could question why are they buckled? Try and see if WSP do these as they are Italian made and appear to be close to OEM quality.
-
Have they been powdercoated at some point? That could also be the issue.
-
That's a 2in dual downpipe though, you need to measure the collector ID. Std size is 2.25in for the actual system.

No meets as such for the Corrado. Im just outside Aberdeen in Kintore but originally from Kirriemuir. Eastsidevw has a meet planned for 3rd March I think.
-
Local to me then, there's a local site called eastsidevw that you might like.

In general terms they cost no more than any other car. Most are now enthusiast owned so they are taken care of and the big bill items will have been looked at. Yes potentially they could give big bills but if you buy right it shouldn't be too bad, helps if you can do some of the work yourself as well but they are no harder to work on than the Corrado in my experience, just heavier. If you want to start getting big power out them then yes it starts getting expensive. All you really need is one that's been mapped, uprated suspension, uprated brakes and maybe an exhaust. That will give you a very competent car.

Welcome, where exactly are you? Car looks good, relatively rare being a white VR.

Seriously consider the RS, even the S4 is well worth the money. It never ceases to amaze me at how easily they do everything. Any questions you have ask me or get on Audisrs forum as its heavily B5 based and there are a lot of knowledgeable people on that site. Remember I went from a newish Scirocco to a B5 RS, I intend on never selling mine as there is nothing I could replace it with that gets remotely close.
-
B5 RS4. Engine and drivetrain is a over engineered, still feel soild today, practical, fast and I think damn cool. I bought mine 3 years ago and could sell it for the same after 15k+ miles. There is only one way their prices are going to go. £15k would get you a very nice fettled example with all the right bits done.

Just what I was thinking, it doesn't look original. I caught some of it and didn't think much of it to be honest.

Get a multimeter and check it. Should be around 12v when car is off and around 14v when running.
-
No wonder the 15's felt better, that's monster truck tyres on the 16's. Looks good.

Will defo try and get down this year to have a watch. When the season start?
-
Sorry to hear, where was it too bad?
-
Turbo would get 30mpg on a long run so not much difference. Might just keep going and see my brother in Poole first then head up there. Would probably get somewhere on the Sunday night but I reckon it would be further up the road to save the drive on the Monday. Need to think about it.

Just checked, 503 miles from my front door!!!

Always wanted to go to this. Will definitely pencil it in and see if I can get away to it.
