How to spend all day on your Corrado and do nothing...
swiftkid replied to Pat_McCrotch's topic in General Car Chat
Haha, welcome to corrado ownership!!! i feel your pain, i broke my 13mm socket the other day which pretty much ended my day of mechanics -
try vagcat.com, its very useful. had a quick look for you but i couldn't find the part number
-
yea think that may well be a good option, think he may have sourced a drive shaft but will wait and see. thanks for your help though!
-
perhaps but the part we need is in quite a few bits!!! im not describing it very well to be honest, its like a ring with several holes in that slides over the end of the driveshaft where the ball bearings sit and none of the pictures i've seen give me 100% confidence its the right part
-
Engine code is AGN, manual, fwd. He's rang VW but they just said you can only buy them as a driveshaft. VAGCAT shows a part number for it though.
-
Right my friend is having awful problems getting one tiny part he needs and im trying to help him out. Hes after ring that holds the ball bearings in place on the inner nearside cv joint on a mk4 golf 1.8 non turbo (1999). some people are telling us we need a full driveshaft whilst others say cv joint but were getting prices of near £100 and because the 1.8 non turbo's are quite uncommon its hard to find one in the scrappers. Wondering if anyone with some inside VW knowledge knows if we can just get that part or if not knows where we can get one from even if it has to be driveshaft although he shall not be paying £100 for one. Cheers

Nooooooooooooooooooooo don't do it!!! such a nice car :( -
As said, they are one use only and the ARP bolts are only £10-£20 more anyway, worth splashing the extra cash for re-usable.
-
Gotta say i think your pricing is WAY over what it would cost if you did it yourself. I've just rebuilt my VR engine for around the £700 mark (have lost count and darn't add it all up) but thats alot less than £2k I also have an R32 engine which is for sale for £1300 in the parts for sale section, on top of this you would need a conversion manifold (£400), an oil cooler (£200), wiring converted (dependant on who does it £250-£1500) and some pipes converting and then dependant on how far into the conversion and how much money you want to splash out you could probably get it done for £2.5k and have change left over. Selling a car with a dud engine just isn't a good idea, you will lose loads of money. worst case and cheapest option would be to just buy another VR and chuck it in, you could probably pick up a replacement for £400.
-
and ill look after your wheels while you do it :D are they 9s and 8s?
-
depends what your after. A few places I have used are -Trade Parts Specialist (TPS) -GSF -Avs -VW
-
ahh yes, that is a pain to get out. it comes very close to the oil cooler but you can just squeeze it out, undo it as far as you can with a spanner then try undo it with your hands or molegrips or similar
-
support the engine/gearbox with a jack, do not sit the sump directly on a jack as the weight could damage it, try support it underneath the join between the gearbox and engine or nearest you can to where the mount is so you can lift the weight off the engine mount. then there will be a bolt through the mount to the cross member and 2 or 3 fixing it onto the gearbox/engine, remove and replace. make sure the engine is supported well though as you don't want it moving whilst doing this.

its not the modifications or the price that particularly bothers me, yes its annoying but its the fact i will lose 9 months of no claims and have to shell out another years insurance when im soo close to 5 years no claims. i think im with a specialist now because my suzuki swift is modified (tastefully i might add, and its an old skool one so no laughing!!!)
-
the broker insuring my swift won't insure the corrado so i have to use another company, which means cancelling one policy and starting another therefore losing 9 months into my years no claim and then having to pay a years insurance again. one thing i havn't tried is just insuring the corrado as a standard car (which it is), i just wanted to get future modifications declared so i don't have to stump for admin fee's. might be worth a crack. I just really do not want to lose my insurance 9 months into my years no claims!!!
-
I don't know who else to use though, they always supply me with a good quote and to be honest my current car is worth alot more to me than its actually worth so if i did crash it id just repair it or write it off and not claim. Its just things like this that really wind me up, thats basically a total waste of the £350 i've paid this year. Im not very good at kicking up a fuss so i don't really know how to approach this, my usual attempt ends up with me getting off the phone feeling worse than when i picked it up.

Been doing some major engine rebuilding over the last few weeks but college deadline is in a week so have been trying to get on with that... ends up with a sentence... alt tab corrado forum... alt tab back to assignment... alt tab back to rado forum.... dammit, must concentrate! thursday and friday got full days off to get the engine built up and back in the car and hopefully started for the first time!!! can't wait, cross fingers, toes, arms, legs, eyes, ears it starts without any big problems!!! famous last words though

Why its sometimes better to ring the Dealer first...
swiftkid replied to Pat_McCrotch's topic in Suppliers Forum
yes quite right! there was a guy on ebay a while back after £100 for a second hand front splitter, thats one thing i wish the dealers would get seeing as they are broke on most corrado's -
i might try speaking to someone more senior but end of the day its not actually them who are insuring you because they are a broker. it really winds me up this admin fee, i don't get paid extra for doing my bloody job, its worse than the outrageous bank charges!!! i just don't know what to do now because there is no-way in hell im losing a years no claims because they are morons, but i want my car on the road!!! can you get someone else to insure your car? might try speaking to martin on ed38, see if he can do anything seeing as HIC are 'sister' company

like how much 1 audi tt arm and wiper is... with discount  -
I know, its totally ridiculous. might call up HIC and see if they can do anything. I live in quite a nice area as well so it isn't like its high risk. really hate insurance companies, they are basically ridiculously overpriced peace of mind. they charge ridiculous amounts and then when you actually need something from them they will winge and moan to get out of anything.
