well i seem to be crap at updating this so its time to have a quick go. been on the verge of giving up recently, kept finding more and more bits i wasnt happy with, but i have stuck at it and mot is booked in for weds 7th april. bricking it after sonicrott's mot adventure. where do we start then. i am running 288mm carriers/calipers/pads on 280mm 4 stud g60 discs. this works fine and dandy and improves stopping over the g60 setup. there is an overhang on the pad but nothing serious. i think it will want grinding down after 6000 miles ish. i thought that my head gasket was on the way out due to smoking exhaust. lots of investigating and blocking off heater matrix etc eventually led me to the actual design of the back box being at fault. it lets water run down the tail pipe and sit in it. paint/lacquer on the bonnet is now terrible and really getting on my tits. not sure where to go with it yet. speedo stopped working, but it was the connector on the gear box that was at fault (cheers shaun for the replacement one). the sill both inner and outer was pretty rough on the nearside, so had a bit of welding done. replaced a few crispy/nackered bits for the mot climatronic wiring-Golf from May 01.pdf24032010211.jpg[/attachment:aov5wtd8] 2.8l 24v Climatronic system.pdf24032010212.jpg[/attachment:aov5wtd8] 18032010207.jpg[/attachment:aov5wtd8] still doesnt idle right after replacing many parts, but is vastly improved with replacement isv. still need to figure out whats causing this. and laser 4 wheel alignment to follow as a treat if the old girl passes the mot.

depends what carrado your after though. vr turbo will leave a 4motion for dead. you havnt actually said why you want one other them being unusual. which in my opinion they are not - its a scirocco mk3 and a bridge between mk2/3 golf. its never going to be as refined as a car 10 years its junior but thats part of the appeal to most of us. it was made to drive not to be filled with electronic comforts/parts to weigh it down and interfere with handling/power/you actually driving the car based on your own abilities. as you seem to have picked up on it was designed to be a sports coupe, very different to your golf so they are never going to compare well. a corrado does what it says in every review since it was first made. looks good, drives well and will put a big ass smile on your face when you drive it like you stole it (might have swapped a few words there). dont think they are the most reliable car in the world nor the most unreliable. they are getting on a bit and do need some tlc and some general updating of sensors/brakes/bushes etc. on the whole if you really need to ask why people want one i can only conclude that you dont really want one in the first place.

Because you will be near enough a qualified mechanic after a couple of years owning one.

Can VR driveshafts be removed without touching suspension?
mimjed replied to Andy T's topic in Drivetrain
depends how deep you pockets are, how soon you need the car and if you feel it all needs doing or not. you can buy a new front hub with the bearing already in it. saves a lot of hasstle with a press. just bolt back up and away you go. -
agreed bigger isnt better, in this intstance. mine fits perfectly behing the grill, so it isnt very big but no need to cut anything. better if you can find one with inlet/outlet on the same side, i wish i would have done. ballache to plumb in if not.
-
need to take some measurements :cuckoo: :cuckoo: :cuckoo: then try again. mine is 65mm deep and i didnt cut anything to make it fit.

So what am I getting? These (DP3981C) http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/car/parts_pad.asp?part=pad&make=VOLKSWAGEN&model=Golf&year=2%2E8+VR6+%2892%2D95%29# And are 288mm VW discs just generic? no you will need 95-98 golf mk3 ones assuming they came off a mk3 golf. same part also listed for early mk4 1.8t so id assume this is most likely what your after. http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/car/parts_pad.asp?part=pad&make=VOLKSWAGEN&model=Golf&year=2.8+VR6+%2895-98%29 the early vr6 used 280mm, different calipers etc. offsets could be different on the discs. worth having a look at the part number stamped on top of your caliper (should be ate) just to be certain.

sadly not a part im clued up on yet as back brakes are still fine for me with some ferodo pads in them. id presume as logic dictates the further down the alphabet you go the newer the design of the part, im sure you did too. im sure somebody more useful than me will soon point you in the right direction though

the 3 and 4 refer to offside and nearside as far as im aware. check wiper blades for example
-
that is on the steep side but you do pay more for labour when is gone because they have to clean all the crap out. wouldnt cost anywhere close to that if you were just replacing as a precaution. up to you really but you can buy a g60 lump without charger happily for under £500. depends if your happy to remove and refit yourself though as to whether it will save you any money though.
-
well head gasket going from lack of coolant is one of the main causes for them to go. wouldnt really be driving the car around if i had been told this needed replacing. also could be the reason behind the juddering, if youre burning what youre not supposed to be then its not going to run right. worth checking your ht leads/spark plugs are seated correctly if they have compression tested it.

fuseboard cover/drivers side undertray will give you enough access. who said these were running out anyway. same as 16v so im sure there will be enough around
-
seems to be some arguement about what size it is. its in german though so im not sure what the arguement says. it is a 2.0 16v tank. either 55l (seems most likely to me), or a 70l tank? sorry i cant be more useful.

looks pants on a rado. the only thing close ive seen which looks ok is satin black but i think its only the chavvy white stickers that make it look better satin rado.jpg[/attachment:532ftzrl]

ive turned into a big fan of silver on rado's personally. im also a sucker for the lambo purple they used on diablo's, would love to see a rado done in this. wouldnt go mad on body mods as the standard motors seem to hold there value well (possibly better than modded cars) at the moment.

cheers dude i did some digging around yesterday. they have a permanent live and a switched earth. the cables run behind where relay position 7 is. black/brown negative, black/yellow live. i ran two new cables through but still nothing so i came to the conclusion that the horn is dead, went to test from the battery but the voltage had dropped to 1.5v. doh, what incredibly bad timing for it to run out of juice. £39.50 for a new horn from vw though  so i think im going to nick one out of the old dears mazda's. havnt told them that yet though
-
come on then boys and girls im struggling on this one. when i take the relay 53 out as shaun said then it stops the clicking noise. but as you would expect no horn sound. there is a second 53 relay in my fuse board but when i plug this in to the other slot it does the clicking again. any clues what i can try? or what wires are for the horn (from steering cloumn) so i can run them straight to it, instead of through the relay? cheers jim

depends what youre trying to achieve boss. my method is 10 psi under max to allow for heat, but as stated this is because im lazy.
-
i go with 40 all round, mainly because im lazy and cant be bothered with pumping them up all the while. ill admit they should be a bit lower though, so there is some give in the walls. makes the handling less skittish. id assume for optimum youd be looking around 32 maybe a tad less on the rear, only my opinion though.
-
cheers shaun. next day off is weds so ill have a good hunt around then.
-
sorry didnt know whether to go engine bay or interior for this. does the wiring for the horn go through a relay? discovered today i get a clicking noise like when a relay has gone. instead of a nice horn noise. i wasnt aware they did so am a bit confused. any clues people?

just made my day

i have one so its not really a problem. but i dont really trust the stock checker thing, all the stores near to me have one in stock. but as i say the old dear asked ealier and they had a good hunt around but nothing found.
