  1. I went to great lengths to make sure that my head tdc mark and my flywheel tdc mark aligned properly. I found that it was the intermediate pulley that was the hardest to keep from moving but that was is the least critical because you can loosen the dizzy to get the ignition timing right. If that was my engine i would not leave it time'd up like that. Maybe thats me being anal. :hitler:
  2. bottom line .. the top dead centre line on the flywheel should coincide with the tdc line on the head sprocket being flush with the face of the head. I always use the flywheel and the head sprocket line as my references as they are the most accurate. Looks like you will have to re-do the mechanical timing imo. Whoever done it last used the wrong timing mark on the flywheel.
  3. you can check ignition timing this way but not cam timing.
  4. what he said /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
  5. I'll bear that in mind. Code version is 2.883e i think from memory. One thing I have noticed is that the map pressure dosn't seem to drop much once the engine starts. Maybe my isv is stuck?!!
  6. he's a stronger man than me thats for sure.
  7. That's just typical isn't it. It's the sort of thing that makes you start looking over your shoulder and getting paranoid about life. You change to MS and do all the complicated stuff and then you get stitched up by your coil and then by a 2nd gsf one and you think WTF give me a break! yeah gsf really gave me a bum steer. I had a much better time tonight.I was almost enjoying it. The problem is definitely air and lack/or too much of. When i make changes to the idle control or fiddle with the idle bleed screw it seems to affects how easily the car starts and how long the car idles. None of the fueling changes seem to make any difference. I had some of my best runs tonight,i.e ran for several seconds. And it starts everytime now. .. ho hum. :)
  8. damn.. i :) hope he hasn't left for the unit already.
  9. re engine stands: machinemarts or just get one off flea bay
  10. well i'm sure you gathered from the silence that that didn't work. Those devices are insulated so it shouldn't make a difference anyway. Weird it caused you(wayne) a problem. Anyway I convinced myself that there were no wiring or MS faults so I used a coil from a mark3 golf temporarily and I now have spark, and it starts now very consistently. I had already changed the coil for one from gsf and so that is why i dismissed Waynes sugestion that the coil was faulty. I should no better than to get vital components from there  Anyway I have spark and start. I just can't get the thing to idle. i've tried various afterstart enrichment schemes and fidle with advance, afr and ve tables. I even tweaked the base required fuel value which helped a bit but still no glory. Its a tad fresh out so I have come in to warm up. Todays main log file was too big to post up,this one was one of my early starts this morning.
  11. I much prefer the analogue afr guages to the digital ones. car looks very tidy.
  12. is yours cracked? In a way thats good news. I'm sure you know what I mean by that..
  13. Its nice to see the sum of its parts. 8) ... for a change. :D
  14. yeah, but i'd only do it to make sure everything was ok with the build anyway.i personally wouldn't drive on it? ..well maybe round the block.. so i wouldn't bother making it pretty, just air tight. :)
  15. 4cking hell Neil too much information! PMSL :D u should really stop typing what your( oops ..just farted..) thinking.
  16. you could do.run some by-pass boost pipe work. It should run...
  17. ta-daah. well done chaps. Looking good. when do you hope to crank it over?
  18. relay position number 12 .basically if you put pin 85 to ground and pin 86 to 12 volts then pins 87 to 30 will be short circuit. If you either un ground 85 or take 12volts off 86 then pins 87 to 30 will be open circuit. Make sense? Anyway when you turn on the ignition on pin 86 has 12 volts to it.The ecu also grounds pin 85 temporarily to prime the pump. Then when you crank and run it grounds pin 85 permanently. to run the pump.
  19. Neil the best thing you can do is save some money and take it to a vag specialist. I'm a diy'er myself but sometimes you have to speak to the pro's.I had to suffer that indignity this week with my golf. Get it down to someone who knows the g60 like the back of their hand. Start saving your pennies bud. This is too nice a car to be suffering from running probs. :hitler:
  20. yeah check fuel pressure. Maybe fpr is faulty!?! It would explain alot..
  21. funny, I was day dreaming today flicking through a 911& porshe world  and this subject came up,as a problem to look out or with the 964's yada yada yada.. I'd never heard of a dual mass flywheel truth be told.. Anyway cheers for sharing.
  22. Golf looks cool. Any more pics?
