  1. Need a new alternator for the vr have seen cheaper ones for £70 producing 70amps or for £150 120 amps does 70amp effect battery life or cause any running issues?
  2. The engine is now all together sporting a set of 268 cams that I was offered, managed to get the old engine out today, plan A was to use the hoist but I kind of inadvertently went for plan B.
  3. Debating a set of 268 cams , not sure if it's worth the out lay!
  4. Replaced the o-rings for the injectors as I noticed a load of crystallised fule on my old block and that was why it was running a little lumpy before.
  5. Finished putting it all together today, have a mass of photos as I have gone a long to record my progress but have only shared a few, have used all new shiny stainless bolts and gone with a metal head gasket and replaced the upper tensioner and bolt for the newer version.
  6. Nice, I have the new bolt and banana, finished putting my engine together today so should be all good was just a little worried I had the wrong parts, should be all good though.
  7. If your upgrading to the mk4 guide do you need to use the mk4 tensioner bolt?
  8. What's the cam shafts like in these engines , I imagine they are big enough to roast a pig on?
  9. Been a little busy at work so not much progress of late, have the cylinder head being skimmed, valves reseated and guides being put in by someone local to save me some time, today though managed to clean up and paint the schrick manifold and part polish the oil filter housing.
  10. Just given stealth a call, the part number is N0122731 have now ordered 12 clips from vw. Cheers
  11. Looking for a set of wrist pin clips for a vr6 piston, have seen varying info saying they are 21-22mm c clips, any one think i could get away with using some internal cir-clip's from halfords?
  12. Question about the oil non return valve in the block, how can you tell its working? I can blow air through mine either side is this right?
  13. Shiny new engine stand sporting a cleaned up block, have a week off work and parts are coming in fast, have to say German ebay is the place to be for getting all your spares plus with the euro being so weak it's worth putting up with th Google translator.
  14. trying to find a retailer in the uk for one of these, delivery cost from the states are double the price of the bearings meaning its over a £100 delivered. Any push in the right direction appreciated.
  15. 3 benefits is that I have two funcky conrod paper weights and a vr6 coffee table, these cars are strange last year I had so many problems with it I began to hate it to the extent where I got my garage to replace break pads because I couldn't be bothered, now the engine is kaput I can't wait to strip it and get the car flying again it's almost like I want the punishment.
  16. I know exactly why, managed to get water in the engine when we had heavy storms about 5 months ago, feel a little stupid for letting it happen and the circumstances were a little out of my control but I'm not one for a excuses so any way... After taking my block apart i noticed two bent conrods so replaced these but nothing else as was doing this on a bit of a budget, replaced the head gasket and stripped the head performing a partial rebuild with new stem seals and re seated the valves, after putting it all back together with a few hiccups along the way i had the car running for about an hour and a half with two short journeys up the road just to see how it went. Now on the third trip and sorting out a cylinder not firing BOOM it all went wrong, pulled over and tried to turn the engine over but nothing after later inspection i found one of the pistons had quite literally let go and showered into lots of little fragments, the timing had slipped and a valve impacted with the piston, this was due to the tensioner bolt failing as the engine was damn noisy just before it exploded. The bore is knackered with a huge gash down the side of it and the cylinder head surface is pretty chewed up so i have managed to get my self another block which arrived today and start the long process of a rebuild.
  17. Just for you clumpy1 http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C501544
  18. Going from the previous group buy its a saving of 5-10% depending on numbers which is better than a kick in the teeth plus the schimmel cams are a lot cheaper than schrick 268's which seem to be around £5-600. I would be interested to know of any difference between the schimmel cams and the schrick.
  19. I may be interested in some cams had some 263 from the last group buy but would be interested in a set of 268's I'm sure Vince would be able to mix up the cam sizes a little if it helps get enough people together.
  20. Just thinking this car may worth it just for the wheels? http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/subaru/legacy/subaru-legacy-2l-twin-turbo-manual-gtb/3617297
  21. I'm looking for another block, what is the mileage on the engine, has any work been done to the block or head at any point in its life?
  22. Always wondered about 263's and the schrick manifold together as they are meant have a similar effect on engine characteristics.
  23. I had a set of kW v1's on my car and was impressed by the build and handling,I went back to standard as I found I was loosing traction on the road due to very uneven roads in wiltshire, city and track driving I would go for coilovers but it's standard for me from now on, another thing I found was at higher speeds the stability of the car on standard shocks is set up well and hitting pot holes is less nerve racking.
  24. Yeah that's my folks, the mk1 is my mums she ain't to keen on letting me borrow it when she found out how much they are worth now. Just took my engine apart today and the engine is fubar so looking like a replacement or rebuild, keep us posted on how your getting on mine maybe some time.
