  1. Loving the armrest mate, looks OE, did you go to Protyre in Plymouth??, if you did you should have popped round for a brew mate. Rog.
  2. Great progress mate, I'm watching this thread with interest, I've got a funny feeling I'll be doing the same in the not too distant future... Rog.
  3. Cheers for the link Rob but I've managed to get this 2.8 for a really good price, the bloke has loads of other spares that he is throwing in and he is delivering so I think it's a good deal. Current plan is to try the new 'thicker' fully synth oil in the 2.9, if that work then all is good but I just happen to have a complete 2.8 sat in the garage incase of future problems. If the new oil doesn't work then the 2.8 will be dropped in and the 2.9 will be rebuilt in slow time (as funds allow) this will then go back in the Storm to keep it all OE. Rog.
  4. Sean, i sent him an email explaining that I was getting tapping noise and what the mileage was etc, he sent me a replay asking was oil I was currently using and when I last changed it, I replied that I was using Synta 10w 40 from VW and this was his reply. Hi Rog That's a pretty basic oil and combined with a bit of wear, it could lead to some engine noise. I would try out a better 10w-40 and see how that goes. http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-657-10w-40.aspx The best ones are the Gulf Competition, Motul 300V, Redline and Millers CFS. As a cheaper alternative the Fuchs Syn MC, Shell HX7, Motul 6100 and Millers XSS/Trident are good choices. If that doesn't help, the next step is a 10w-50, but they are a lot more money than a 10w-40 semi-synthetic. http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx The Nanodrive CFS is, on paper, the best oil available, but the Pro S and CFS are both really good oils, so all are good choices for your car. Regards Tim I went for the Millers CFS as it is a bit cheaper and TBH this is an experiment so I want to keep the costs down. Also, when buying oil from Opie enter CORRADO at checkout and receive 10% discount. Rog.
  5. Dan at Devon Dub Shack is breaking a Corrado, maybe worth dropping him a n email, tell him Rog (with the Storm) sent you. Rog.
  6. Me and the missus are making a weekend of it, driving up Saturday, staying in a travel lodge / premier inn, she is going shopping in Leicester all day Sunday while I'm at the show then meet up in the evening for a few beers and some grub. Tesha is more than happy for a bit of company if anyone else fancies it. Rog.
  7. Nice one, cheers fella's, I assume I should be able to use the cams currently fitting to my storm so I shouldn't see any 'real' drop in performance. Rog.
  8. Ordered some millers 10w 50 from Opie today, hopefully it make things better. Rog.
  9. My Storm is making some rather horrible noises and is probably on its last legs, looks like the bottom end has gone and if my new 'thicker' oil doesn't solve the problem it looks like its new engine time. So, a local bloke has a spare VR6 gathering dust in his garage, it's from a Mk3 Golf but he claims its a 2.9, now I'm pretty sure its a 2.8 as I'm lead to believe all Golfs were 2.8 So, will the 2.8 fit my car, ie. can I simply replace like for like, will it mate to my gearbox ect? Rog.
  10. Couldn't find any corn flour so I stuck 300 gramms of self raising in it.... result, the noise is all but gone but the cabin sticks of freshly baked bread..... Rog.
  11. Thanks for the replies guys, Oilman has recommended a better quality oil than the Synta that i am currently using, failing that he has recommended a 10w 50 oil but has stated that they are quite expensive. Oil pressure is good, it idles at a bar and raises to 4 bar at 3k. I think I might bite the bullet and get the 10w 50 stuff. I'm seeing another 'VR6' man tomorrow to see what he says, he has experience of piston slap so hopefully he can offer some advice, he also have a built up engine in his garage gathering dust that he doesn't want a lot of money for so it's not all bad news. Rog.
  12. Afternoon chaps, My Storm has started making strange noises recently, it's a tapping noise under load and is worse over 3k, I took it to a local enthusiast (has owned 3 VR6 golfs) and he's fairly convinced that it's not the chains and asked what engine work I've done to the car since I've owned it. The only thing I've done is change the oil, he has suggested that maybe because of the high mileage that the oil is too thin and that I should try a thicker oil. Can anyone recommend a suitable oil?? I'm currently using the stuff VW recommend which I think is 10w 40. Rog.
  13. INA lifters ordered from OEM parts, £67 delivered. Rog.
  14. Evening all, I'm planning on replacing my lifters/tappets soon and was after some advice and tips on removing the cams. I've removed cams on a belt driven engine before but have never done a VR6 engine so would appreciate any tips. Cheers Rog.
  15. Yes Jim mine is running the Schimmel cams, I don't mind doing the tappets if they are not too expensive but don't really want the expense of a full head rebuild. Rog.
  16. Thanks for the replies guys. So I'm thinking that maybe I should change all the tappets, how difficult is it to get the cams out and what sort of money am I looking at for a set of tappets. Cheers Rog.
  17. That's exactly it Jim. How hard is it to remove the cams and check the followers? Rog.
  18. Little update, I've done an oil change and it's made no difference. In fact it's getting worse, you can now hear it even when warm, strangely it's practically loud at about 3000 rpm. The noise sounds like it's coming from the air box end of the engine and fairly certain it's from the valve train. 'VW rule' has mentioned that it's probably the inner spring/plunger on one of the valve that has failed, what do the collective think?? Also how hard is it to change these? Many thanks Rog.
  19. Are there any fuses or relays to check, just a bit strange that only one side has stopped working. Rog.
  20. My clutch bite is very low on the pedal, is it possible to adjust the clutch? Or maybe it just needs bleeding, how hard is it to bleed the clutch. Many thanks Rog.
  21. Evening all, quick one, my passenger electric window is not working, anyone have any idea why before I start digging? Rog.
  22. Good work Sean, out of interest is this just to take the rad out?? BTW I painted that floor when I was on mechs course, it was only 15 odd years ago, can't believe it needs doing again already...lol Rog.
  23. Not yet mate, I've got a replacement pump but just need to fit it, be interested to see how you get on with yours. I wouldn't worry to much about the supply problem code, I cleared mine and it stayed away until a disconnected my battery again, like the others have said it always pops up when power has been removed. Rog.
  24. Black G60 (may have been a 16v) spotted yesterday in Plymouth on Travistock rd with the bonnet up, saw you drive past me so assumed all was good. Rog.
  25. If it rains it pours mate, always something with a Corrado. Rog.
