Some people now use a clay cloth, also there is IronX which is meant to do a similar job, really stinks though.

I know that feeling, is a nightmare when you scrap off some of the underseal that looks fine and underneath is busy rusting away.

Was a guy on another forum i use had his mum sew him some shock socks, he updated the thread after a year or so and the shocks looked great still, i believe he got the idea from rally cars. Will try find a link.

Sorting out the rust on the wing, wasn't as bad as i was expecting. Put car back on the ground again, and have been covering the inner wings etc with a hard black wax Here is most of the products i've been using so far, Might be of interest to

Yeah, i like the Roose hoses, swapped my samcos for some as the samcos kept splitting.

Cheers, It is taking me ages, most weekends and evenings since xmas. I much prefer doing myself though, i don't seem to trust garages any more. Am hoping if i deal with all the rust etc, then a bodyshop can just spray it externally and not have to worry about the underneath and wheel arches etc.

Had the sill welded now, guy did a good job imo, much better than the previous repair. And then painted in that rust encapsulator paint for now, still deciding what to do with the bodywork, might leave it in the black until its back on the road and then go see some bodyshops about a full respray. Gone all the way down the sill, to be sure.... Next job is the rust on the wing and then got to repeat it all on the other side of car.

I have the clips that fit into the bush mouting point. Bought them from vw and don't need them. Can get a pic of them fitted as just done mine. -
I just turn the tv off and work on car instead. I tend to only watch a handful of channels if i do watch TV. I got sick of adverts and then recaps of the previous 15mins of program that were watching only 2-3mins ago before the advert.

Cheers, its all starting to come together, the welding will hold me up a bit but would rather wait then get it bodged. Got the rear bumper bar and brackets done in the plasticoat Chopped out and started cleaning the rust up on the sill, will have to do the other side as well, think its going to be a bigger hole.

Same on mk2 golfs, usually a few on ebay, i bought a few as i seem to break them every time i remove it :lol:

You can get a little gadget to measure the pitch, i usually work out the pitch and then the diameter afterwards (sometimes by trial and error) Could be a 1.5 or 1.75 pitch, hard to tell from a photo

I think they got revised to stainless screws with a plastic washer, i remember buying some from Pat McCrotch.

I've done it by sacrificing the whole plastic housing, it was already broken so didn't really matter. Took a while though.

What is this noise? Piston slap? (VR6) - maybe not the end of the world..

Could be the cable in the mechanism. Mine did that small gap when i first got it. And then one day it just dropped and wouldn't go up at all.

I bought one of them mechanics stetstethoscopes. Only a cheapo one but it's amazing. Can really pin a noise down to an area with it. It helped me work out something was wrong with my clutch. I also have a spare engine if it's of any use to you. It has no cams. I got fed up with noises and decided to build a new one up. So still have my original engine and one i bought off the forum to use for a year. You could have that for nothing.
