at 140K, Personally I'd take the head off and get it rebuilt (guides and seals as well as a skim to make sure it's true...) and while it's off, drop the sump and renew the bottom end bearings and oil pump... total cost well under £450 if you do it all yourself with reasonable machining costs and you'll end up with what is basically a new engine.... 8) I did this on my 1.8 16V when I had her and NEVER regretted it in the least..... 8)
  2. I know, but any excuse to post a pic of a Cobra! ;) 8)
  3. not when you compare it with a normal Cobra...
  4. open window, pull hard on old strip, throw away old strip. Carefully feed new strip in to mirror end first and make sure the groove in the scraper is lined up and over the top of the door properly, lay it down along that metal door top taking care not to bend the new scraper. When it's on all the way along, tap it down with the ball of your hand... DONE... 8) Well, that's how I did mine anyway... 8) I'll take photos when I do my passenger side one (got a pair at the same time, but the drivers one needed doing ASAP as it kept coming off! )
  5. hey! mine was off the road for a day under 9 months! :| I know how you feel M15 VW, I didn't think I'd ever get her back together again and drive her, but the grin you'll have when you do will make it all worth it! 8)
  6. Eye, that's the bugger... 8) Check this out, taken at Goodwood festival of speed this year... 8)
  7. 10 to 15 minutes to fit.... 8) No tools required either... :D

    Knocking Noise

sounds like it could be your anti vibration damper has come adrift... :| Have a look HERE for details and photos of said damper... 8)
  9. Sorry, had problems with a sticking throttle (not much fun when you're driving in traffic! :| ) If you have a Golf 1.8 Haynes manual, that'll tell you EXACTLY how to do a thermostat as it's exactly the same part, in fact, the pump's identical too! 8) The only way to get at the thermostat is from below. Jack up the car, and you'll see a bracket attached with 2x 13mm bolts going straight up into the front of the block just infront of the sump. You need to remove this bracket. There are those 2 bolts, one at the left side, and a sneaky one inside the bracket on the right side which goes into the top of the P/S pump (sides as you look from the front of the engine... ) once you've undone these 4 bolts, that bracket should drop out. Above where it was there is a black plastic elbow. That's the thermostat housing. There's 2x 10mm headed bolts holding it on, undo them and you'll suddenly get wet as all the coolant drops on your head! (this is the easiest way to drain the fluid! during this job! ;) ) Personally, I'd replace the plastic elbow as they get brittle with age due to the heat, and a new one's only about £5 anyway... 8) Once that elbow is undone, it'll just pull off the pipe once you've undone the fastener and you'll see the bottom of the thermostat. Pull it out, fit the new thermostat, O ring (don't foget to remove the old one! ) and Elbow (you may need to attach the pipe during fitting of the elbow else it can be a REAL pig to fit afterwards! ), put the bolts back in and tighten, and then re-fit the bracket... 8) Done.... Sorry that took sooo long for my to get around to writing, kept forgetting and getting side tracked... :|
  10. it's got the record for highest percentage of owners it's killed, and for the longest skid marks in history leading to a fatal accident! The accident was on a californian road and ended as they went off a cliff... the driver was killed when the car hit the beach... :? The speed limit thing is kinda true... an AC Cobra coupe (the Le mans race version) raced an E type jag down the M1 at speeds in excess of 150mph... The police cars of the day (morris minors!) couldn't keep up or catch them (Well, duh! ;) ) and this was mentioned in the houses of parliament as the new 70mph speed limit was introduced....
  11. yeah, the G60 grill badge has been deleted from VWs stock, GPC can't get 'em anymore, and even Trimsport don't make 'em .... :(

    CV boot split

if you split the ball joint instead of removing it from the arm, you won't have to re-set your tracking as it can only go back exactly how it came to bits... 8) Should save ya some cash there... 8)
  13. I am in awe... That's my favourite car of all time.... 8) I soooooooo want to have a go in one of these it's untrue... :|

    Unplugging ISV on G60

check that the idle switch is being pressed (and works!) when the throttle is shut... I forgot to re-connect it after doing my head gasket and the idle was around 1400rpm until I realised what a muppet I'd been...
  15. I'm pretty certain that the G60 grill badge was the same on both style Corrado grills and on the Golf too... Can you get a pic of the back of it, or a part number off it, and I'll compare it with the one on mine to let you know for definate... 8)
  16. I was about to put "vacuum pipe" even before I read that it's got a join in it... :| That's certainly not going to be helping your engine run nicely... for the sake of a couple of quid to replace it, it's worth doing... 8) Remember to make sure it's exactly 100cm long though! ;)
  17. Gunk's good, but smells nasty... :| Try the Auto Glym engine cleaner, it's very good.... 8) Spray on, adgitate with a brush then hose/wash off... easy and effective.
  18. yup, Nakamatchi also make 'em and I know that Clarion used to, but I've no idea about their current line up... 8)
  19. damn, that's just on the change over IIRC... :? pouring oil into the bores sounds well dodgy... :|
  20. FPR = Fuel Pressure Regulator... the standard Corrado G60 one is 3 Bar, most uprated chips need a 3.5bar one off a Porsche 944 Turbo... (don't worry, they're about £30! ;) )
  21. oooh, that's usefull to know how to do Roger... wish I knew that when I had to do mine a few months ago.... 8)
  22. reset on a VR6 simply means disconnecting the battery for about 15 mins... 8)

    G60 HIGH TEMPS

benji16v, Bowden mate... ;) What exhaust system have you had put on DELG60? the tunnel and back seats on my car have gotten warm ever since I put my stainless exhaust on, but not hot, and I don't notice the interior being hotter than it was before... :|
  24. the panels are all interchangeable, but you may find that the locating holes for the radiator are in the wrong place (think it's only the one on the driver's side which is wrong, and I'm pretty sure it's only the VR6 which was the different panel... :| ) All you'll have to do is drill a hole for the bolt to go through if it hasn't got one already.... 8)
  25. timing is everything... ;) Check the bottom gear on the crank which drives the cam belt... They're known to come loose on MKII GTIs and wear the woodruff key (lump wot sits in a hole on the crank) so the cam timing goes all to pot... :? Quickest way to check it is to get the car set to TDC on 1 on the flywheel marking (through the gearbox timing inspection hole) and see where the cam markings and crank marking on the cam belt end are... if they're out, it's time to take that pulley off and check it before you start bending valves... :? Otherwise, as bcstudent, says, it all depends on which engine it is as to where else the fault could be... ;)
