There is someone on here who's done one... It was making around 180BHP with 220lbft torque IIRC... 8) Oh, and 50+MPG! :D

To Whoever thought they were being clever...,

Not good... :? -
Right, a few more photos... 8) Todays work was pretty fruitful... The engine still doesn't run, but that's 'cos I've got a couple of bits I need to get before I'm prepared to try it... I re-loomed the wiring today with Self Amalgamating tape, and it looks like it just left the factory again... 8) Major pain in the ass to do, very fiddly, but well worth it... :) Started to work on the brakes and a few other bits and bobs that needed doing... 8) Oh, and before anyone makes any comments, I've got some nice shiney wheel bolts and new rear disks on order!

The "roo bar" is just the Iron work from inside a normal Corrado Bumper... That's what's left when you take the plastic skin off... 8)

Nah, I enjoy it every now and then, but I couldn't do it professionally again... my last hobby turned into my full time job, which kinda killed the enjoyment a bit... I don't want that to happen again! ;) Although I suppose this was a job that's turned into a hobby, so it's kinda balanced itself out! :D

if you twist the mirror top (hold it's base as you do it) towards the door window, you'll see a pair of screws inside the base of the mirror which holds it onto the door... Apply copious quantities of WD40 before trying to remove them though, as they'll never have been touched since they were fitted and will have grown into the capitive nuts somewhat.... :?

Yeah, Yeah... I gotta finish the G60 first, and then move onto my MKI which has been sat in my parents garage for the last 5 years... VR6 when I've done those two if I decide to get rid of the MKI... (NEVER getting rid of the G60 now! ;) )

I was thinking about how much I've worked on this since it broke 7 months ago and my brain started to hurt,so I gave up.... :? The money I don't even want to think about! The paint is just bog standard, paint on silver engine laquer from my local (next door but about 10! ;) ) car parts place... the only thing that needed doing to the bits I painted was to get it cleaned in a solvent bath by my mate who's a mechanic... 8) The gearbox was cleaned by Stealth as they rebuilt it, and I slapped the laquer on when I got it home... I've not done the gearbox linkage or the throttle mechanisms as I didn't want to make them stiff or cause any problems, so they still look a bit naff... Nearly all of the black bits were sand blasted and powder coated by a local firm... the Aqua blue rocker cover was already that colour when I got the car, I just rubbed it down with some 800s and then 1000s paper and re-sprayed it with 3 coats of paint and 3 of laquer... it's come out rather well, although there are quite a few marks in it where there have been some major dents/chips in the past... I may look at getting a rocker cover done professionally at some point 'cos I can't spray to save my live! As for tools and the like, the only tools I have I've bought from shows and the like over the last 12 years of so of being into VWs... I really need to treat myself to some decent tools now, some of the ones I have are getting well past their use by dates! It's the space I have that makes the difference.... I'm so glad that my mate pointed out my house when it was for sale and mentioned it had a garage at the back.... if he hadn't I'd never have gone for it and probably wouldn't have had the space to do the work I've done.... 8) Thanks for all the nice comments... 8)

The corrado has a fan-overrun facility which means that the cooling fan can run for a few minutes after the engine has been turned off... If it's running for more than around 10 minutes I'd start to get worried... 15-20 and then I would be worried, any more than that and I'd say something was wrong... I take it you do live in a much hotter country than England, so I'd probably say that if it stays running for more than 15 mins after you've stopped, there's something not quite correct... :? Hope this helps... 8)

Just picking up on something you said in your first post Broken G60... You had your BLOCK skimmed?!? Surely you mean your head? If not, then I dread to think why you'd ever skim (or how you'd even skim!) a cast Iron block! I take it you've checked the obvious things like the ends of the fuel lines aren't torn/worn/ porus and that all of the injector seals are OK. Also that the Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) is bolted on to the end of the fuel rail properly and that the fuel pressure switch on the other end of the rail is also OK.... After that lot, I'd look at getting a new Lambda sensor if it still smells of fuel, making sure that your cam-belt is timed up properly (ie, you're not a tooth out on the camshaft pulley or similar) and that the vacuum hose from the throttle body to the ECU is OK and exactly 1meter long and all of the other vacuum hoses are OK too... If it's anything other than these problems, it's probably worth seeing if you can borrow an ECU off a mate with the same car to see if that makes it any better.... It may also be worth having a look at the earth straps on the engine (one from throttle body to the chassis by the coil, and one from the Gearbox to the chassis and then onto the battery) If these have corroded (gone green) none of your sensors on the engine will be working properly and so willl mess every setting up there is... :| Hope this helps... 8)

Changing the gear oil to 50% semi synthetic and 50% non-synthetic decent new gear oil (1 litre of each) may make a BIG difference... I had this problem on my 1.8 16V corrado and on my MKII 8V Golf GTI and both times it was cured by this oil change... 8) Go down this route before going for a new box... it's a damn site cheaper and about £25 compared with £500! ;)
-
4?!? I know I had to try REALLY hard last week to stop myself buying a nice 1.8 16V to compliment the G60... but 4's just excessive.... Yes, I'm jealous... yes, I'll probably end up with another one when my MKI is finished, and yes, I quite fancy a VR6 to play with as well! ;)

Euro gearbox'd VR6 and G60s shared the same 1st gear ratio... The second gear was totally different (hence why I spent £200 on a VR6 gearbox to strip just for the 1st and 2nd gears! you need both 'cos they're built onto the input shaft and can't be removed!). The final drives on the Euro VR and G60 box's was also slightly different, so I should be able to get just over 60 in second now, rather than about 45... Euro VR6's hit around 70 purely due to the different final drive ratio. 8) As I said before, The US spec boxes were different again due to them being geared for the 2.8 VR6 and I have no idea what's in them either for final drive or for gear ratios... :?

Jeeessssusss... that's a BIG intercooler! I thought my Golf G60 one was big, but that's HUGE! Lookin' like you've got lots left to do... Hope you get it all done in time.... I can't wait to see how it all turns out... :) 8)
-
I'm not selling one! I BOUGHT one for £200... I was saying that 375 is too much for a VR6 gearbox... Sorry for any confusion! :?

Monitor? meet Coke... Coke? meet Monitor... I think I'll keep it thanks... ;) Although I do now have either a black or a grey cloth interior for sale if you're interested... ;)
-
I'm suprised you can hear at all! That's gotta be loud! The only thing that you may have done is heated up the fuel pipes/inlet manifold too much... I'd say towing it back would be a really good idea! ;)
-
Woah... that'd kinda change your perspective on things a bit wouldn't it?!? Black eye and minor scratches? Sheesh, I've seen people get that in a pub, never mind a crash like that!
-
Well, It fits... 8) It's looking like I won't be able to get her running this weekend though, I've just discovered that the pipes for the Mocal oil cooler are WAY too short :? I think I've got a kit to mount the cooler in front of the charger, but I can't do that due to the intercooler being in the way... I'll pick some up this week, and get her running one night now that everything else is connected up... 8) Tomorrows jobs are to get everything tightened into place, fit the new brakes (Brembos up front, MKIV rears), strip the seats and door cards out ready for the leather next weekend and put the head lining back in again, and re-loom the wiring up nicely... 8) Then, when I get the new oil pipes, it'll just be a case of tightening them in, putting the oil in (water's already in, as is the P/S fluid!) and seeing if she runs... 8) I'm a happy bunny today... it's sooooo nice to see it all finally coming together and looking like a car again, rather than a large pile of bits! :D

I got a GOOD lowish milage Golf VR6 box for £200.... £375 is heavy... :?
-
Ah, I just noticed that you're in the states... The US spec cars had different gear ratios from the european ones 'cos of the 2.8 engine... I have no idea what ratios you've got in the 2.8 VR6 boxes... Sorry...

IMHO, the 1.8 16V Corrado is as good a base car for a project as any other model... The only other thing you'll probably have to do is to upgrade the brakes... but then, if I were doing an engine swap to something much more powerful, I'd do an upgrade anyway, hence the Brembos and MKIV rears on my G60! 8) The only other things that go slightly (and I do mean VERY slightly IMO) against using a 1.8 16V are that they are the oldest of the Corrados, nearly all of them don't have ABS and most of them are getting some seriously high milages on them and as such the interiors can get a little tatty... :? On the plus side, they're the cheapest to buy, the body is identical to the early G60s (and not much different from ALL of the other Corrados!) and there's plenty of 'em about that have tired engines, but good bodywork and plenty of history to prove that they are mechanically sound other than the engine with no dodgy crash history... 8) If I were going to set out to do a project with an engine swap, I'd almost certainly base it on a 1.8 16V.... 8) As for cost, depends on what you want to do to it... ;) As for who does it, there's quite a few out there, some of them are listed HERE... 8)

choose is just 'cos he's not using Internet Explorer I'd bet... How big are these photos? There's a maximum size that you can post (can't remember it off hand  ) but I tend to post all my pics at 800x600 and if there's anyone who wants a higher res version, they can PM me and I'll email it to them... 8)

While you're in there, it's probably worth doing the valve guides and valve stem seals... at least then you know that you shouldn't have to touch the head again for another 70K miles + 8)
-
Oh, you timed that nicely... Look what I wrote the other night... :D 8) CLICK HERE! I have no idea what labour rates are like in the states, but $600 (£300) sounds a bit heavy to me... :? You should be able to get the head off from a complete engine in under 3 hours if you've never done it before... A decent machine shop should then be able to get the snapped studs out for either a few beers or a small amount of cash 'cos it's not difficult or time consuming to do if you've got the right tools, then putting it all back together should easily be under 3 hours... 8) Make sure you replace the head bolts (NEVER re-use them!) and get a decent METAL headgasket (preferably genuine VW)... The complete headset costs around £60 here, and I can't see it being that much more over there... 8) Good luck! 8)
