Just seen this advert on tv for car insurance !
chrishill replied to BigTartanJudge's topic in General Car Chat
I saw the advert the other night and thought it had to be a micky-take, until it finished without a punchline. most bizarre, but its memorable i suppose. I agree with you there, I thought the same thing when they first started these 'women only' insurance companies but in truth they will insure men too, they're required to by law so as not to discriminate. It'd be interesting to see if their policies are actually that much cheaper for women or if they just play on the fact that very few women shop around for insurance. -
yup, deffinatly change the dash lighting rather than the gamma, blue/red illumination looks much classier than the stock slime green.

reminds me of a song...My JiangLing, my JiangLing, i'm going to die in my JiangLing! truly scary, sadly i expect most people who'll buy one of these, ie school run mums and OAPs are blisfully unaware of what NCAP is.

I've got a little 2ton trolly jack which just about gets mine high enough to change a wheel, but i have to drive it onto a bit of wood before i can get the jack underneith. I doubt very much if the standard one would get it high enough and like others, i dont trust them very much, they look way too flimsy!

leon cupra? not as much of a looker as the corrado though.

350z and rx8 get my vote, although theres a fair few rx8's about its got an unusual engine like the vr6 which has many fans plus the interiours miles ahead of the 350z.

i've seen the needle shoot up to about 3k a couple of times recently when trying to start it, any relivance?

yup i think vag-com is the next move... so long as it keep going enough to get it to somewhere thats got it! thankfully i'm off for the next few days and theres a decent auto tuners close to me with vag-com.

bit more of an update, tried it again when i got home, and on the 3rd try after turning the engine over for 5 or 6 seconds on the first 2 tries it fired up quite happily, no lumpyness, no stuttering and smooth idle. Could this indicate a crank sensor problem? loosing resolution(?) for a bit then suddenly regaining it? i tried it a few times after it started and it seemed ok...

paying £700 on mine, 3 years no claims, 26 and in a bit of a dodgy (according to the insurers!) area.

ok well i can rule out the immobiliser for a start since it doesnt have a VW one, its got one built into the toad alarm which, when active, doesnt even let the car turn over. how do I check if i'm getting fuel and/or spark?

I've not really had chance to check much since i had to get back to the office, I'll check the battery voltage and relays tonight. Fuel pump relay is 109 isnt it? The clicking is coming from the engine bay, although I've noticed alot of clicking coming from inside the car recently, like when I pump the brakes while stationary... wasnt sure if it was normal or not? how do I check the crank sensor? where is it?
-
yeah, theres the familiar 'wuuuurrrrm' noise as the pump primes, then as i turn the key to start it theres a constant 'click click click' along side the normal noise of the engine turning over, but it doesnt want to fire. been doing a little more reading via the search, could the clicking be a dead ISV?

ARGH! just popped home for lunch and to drop off some polyfiller for the guy decorating one of my rooms, I was already late back from lunch when I tried to start the VR and...nothing! I'd driven it from work to home about 15mins before and it was fine! its turning over, just not firing up. I've tried the old trick of tapping the starter with a hammer which worked once on my old 16v (worth a shot) but nowt. I've had intermittent problems for the last few weeks with the car stalling at junctions and every now and again something missing a beat resulting in a kangaroo hop, didnt seem to be dependant on revs, speed or temperature - just as and when it felt like it. I've used the search and found a few things to check before anyone suggests it, but the other symptoms might help narrow things down a bit. so far i'm thinking: Fuel pump Crank sensor Starter Dizzy cap or leads (although they were checked recently and were fine) anyone got any pearls of wisdom?

get a mate to help you with this. Pop the bonnet, handbrake on, start the car and lift the clutch to the bite while your mate watches the engine. if the mounts are really knackered he'll be able to see alot of movement as you reach bite. get him to try rocking the engine while on bite too. some play is acceptible, and make sure your handbrake is good before trying it or you'll have a squished mate!

thats a bit odd, if the cars in your name i dont see how they could possibly confiscate it because this 'caroline' hasnt paid her council tax!

i've got a set of those for the winter, fortunatly they're the ones with the darker finish on them so the crap wont show up as badly, and they're not in top nick anyway so I'm not fussed about them getting salty! might refurb and sell them next year. -
