The definitive "What Air Filter?" discussion thread
CazzaVR replied to CazzaVR's topic in Engine Bay
Have had a K&N 57i on all my VR6s. Sounded great and the quality of the kit is superb. All the brackets etc fit perfectly. However, as Kev said in the K&N thread, for me the performance felt a little 'flat' when compared with the standard airbox/K&N panel/BMC. -
Ah, my old mota :) Got yourself a good 'un there ;) Looking good 8) Plans? ps- there's plenty of old pics in my Member's Gallery thread ;)
-
My VR measured 192bhp with the K&N and 197bhp with the BMC... I'll have to dig out my plots. Isn't the actual shape of the cone inside the BMC quite different to a regular cone? Think they are supposed to create some sort of 'vortex' (sounds like something off Dr who  ) and have more surface area.

I ran a K&N panel filter in all of my valvers. Drilled the airbox (wingside) with the first 2. Sounded great, with a nice growl. No difference power-wise. Used a K&N panel filter on my last 16v and just removed the snorkel. Again, nice growl, but not as loud as the drilled box. Throttle response seemed a little better. -
Nice one! Doing a job like this gives you a great sense of achievement :)
-
Yep, that's the part. 5 minute job to change :)
-
Anyone else think this is a good idea? Topic seems to come up regularly- might be good to have it all in one place. People could post up their experiences (power gains, noise, problems etc) with the various options available, such as: BMC CDA K&N 57i induction kit Stoeve Motorsport induction kit for the 16v Pipercoss Viper K&N Panel filter Carbonio CAI Drilled airbox etc etc

Yep, no row here, Guv'nor :) Friendly banter all the way :)
-
No, but I think I will remove it now and do a better job of it!
-
Sounds like it could be the door membrane. Take the doorcard off and poor water down the window to see if it's leaking.
-
Mine's the same. I gave it a really good clean and gave it a couple of coats of Hammerite. You'll need to leave it to dry for a couple of days before fitting the cap back on.

Calm down, John! Cobblers, cobblers, cobblers! On my VR6s there was a small but noticeable improvement power-wise when I swapped for the BMC. I also noticed improvements on returning to the stock airbox/paper filter and also by using a K&N panel filter. This is my personal experience with 3 different VR6s. I think if you dyno'd them on the same car back to back, I'm pretty sure the BMC would out perform the K&N every day of the week. I agree with you about the sound 8) , and yes they are a cheaper option worth considering.

No point in getting one that sits in the engine bay. The VR produces loads of heat, which will just get sucked into the open cone, actually reducing power and potentially damaging the MAF with filter oil. Go for a BMC CDA (cone filter in a lovely carbon fibre airbox), Carbonio (open cone, located out of the engine bay, behind front bumper) or similar. These are a bit more expensive but worth it.

1. Sounds like coolant level sensor in the expansion tank is screwed. 2. Hmmm. Either your water temp sensor is knackered (around £8 from Ford), or the stat is stuck open (unless it's a low temp stat? Mine is a low temp 70c stat and my water rarely goes much above 70c). Always check new stats in a mug of boiling water before fitting ;). 3. It is indeed a sealed unit. You can get it cheaper than that from Euro Car Parts. I have a K plate and unfortunately the shape of the socket didn't match the plug. There is no version available with the correct socket, so I had to file off a couple of the ridges on the socket to make it fit. Works perfectly!

grimmy's red vr - been busy with lots of mdf page5

How can they lose a car?! Numpties! Trust me, it will sound much better with the pipe disconnected 8) -
Yeh, mine definately needs a little more tightening as it doesn't 'ping' open as it should. Incidentally, the bulkhead grommet is now obsolete. However, a MK5 grommet is a perfect fit and is much more water tight than the original. A good upgrade for a few pence :) .

Take the ram pipe off ;) Think Stealth found it actually made more power without. It will sound very similar to the K&N with it off- just slightly quieter. Did you ever get the green one back off the insurers? Would be interested in a couple of bits ie front bumper & tailgate ;) -
what are your perfect wheels for a 'Rado and why? Disc

Nick, give me a shout if you ever decide to sell ;) Love 'em. Ideally I'd have Vento Cups, Borbet Cs or BBS RX2s 8) Can never find any though :( -
Here you go: 7364573 It's called a 'valve-crankvent' on the invoice. Hope this helps.

I'll see if I've got it later tonight :)

Fitted it this afternoon. Actually easier than I thought- worst part was popping the fuse box and cover back in  Had to adjust cable a couple of times to get it working properly- think it prob still needs to be a little tighter- got a bit bored of it! I just taped the new cable onto the old and pulled the old one through the bulkhead. The old cable was still in place so I could see exactly what went where before swapping the new one in. Cheers for the advice, guys :)
-
That would be very much appreciated, Mike. The whole thing needs replacing as the clip near the handle is broken, along with the trumpet bits behind the slam panel etc. Got all the replacement parts ready to fit. The actual cable looks very ropey too- really don't want it to snap :? It's been disconnected from the handle ever since I bought the car (hence why I don't know how it's routed). I can get it open because the previous owner rigged up a cable behind the grille.

Cheers mate- I'll let you know how I get on!

Sounds like it's the PCV oil breather valve. I got one from Ford for around £24 a few months back. You can buy all the parts separately, unlike at VW where you have to buy the whole inlet.
