Yes, you still have to pay the vat etc. The sender writes a value of the item on the parcel and this value is what the customs base their figure on. But you will save on something second-hand as the value is lower. If the item is labelled as a gift it doesn't incur any additional costs. Even if you do pay the extra costs it is worth it as s/c kits are rare in this country on the second-hand market.

If you want a cheap kit I'd buy one from the classifieds on vwvortex and you'll get a real bargain. There are some on there for $2000 which is only about £1k so you will save money even after adding on the import duty, vat and shipping and be all set up for about £2000 with a custom map. If you buy a new kit from a UK distributor you'll end up paying over £3k.

When I had the schrick on I had to turn the earth terminals the other way round and rotate the bracket to fit.

Yes, it definitely bolts onto the back of the inlet manifold with a 13mm bolt. The other hole in the bracket is to screw down the plastic cam cover.

You could try the Ford dealer although it's fairly cheap from VW these days (think it's about £60 but used to be £120). A Bosch dealer might do an exchange pump too.

If you don't care about fuel economy and want mega power go FI. Boost is your friend :)

It could well be the maf. When the maf is on its way out or completely dead the ecu overfuels which would explain the smell of petrol (and poor gas mileage) . When mine went my car was bucking like crazy. I suppose it could be other things such as the oxygen sensor or another engine sensor such as the cam sensor. It's probably best to get the car plugged into vag-com or it could get expensive replacing parts to isolate the problem.

From what I remember (I haven't lined it up against another vr6 for ages), I was pulling away quite quickly and was probably 4-5 car lengths ahead by 100 mph which probably doesn't sound like that much but is a big difference. It's definitely a big improvement over standard on paper and in reality.

Your probably right Joe, I haven't got a plot for my car when it was n/a but when I lined up against my mates vr6 I only started pulling away at around 3500 which suggested to me that there was no significant improvement at low revs.

Compared with an n/a engine at low revs there is nothing in it, but the power starts building at 3500 and then it pulls hard to the redline. The performance is comparable with something like a Boxster S, probably a bit quicker.

There are basically 2 kits, Z- Engineering and a Vortech based kit (either VF-Engineering, C2 Motorsports or Eurotech ): The Z-Eng. kit is only available in stage 1 (250-275 hp depending on the car) . It costs about £2000 new (excluding fitting). It is more limited than the vortech kits as the boost is fixed. The VF-Eng vortech kits cost about £2500 for stage 1 (250-75 hp) and £3500 for stage 2 (280-300 hp). These kits are sold through UK distributors like NS Racing or Stealth Racing. However the C2 Motorports stage 1 kit promises 300+ hp but they don't sell it for European or OBD 1 cars but you can still buy the kit minus the software and get your car tuned on a rolling road (about £400). It would have to be imported from the US and costs £2000 + postage + import duty + vat so would probably cost £2500 (+ £400 for the custom chip) Eurotech kits are not sold anymore but can be found in the classifieds on http://www.vwvortex.com for about £1000 but again you'd have to import it from the US and incur the costs of transport and tax etc. The vortech kits can be upgraded with a smaller pulley, bigger injectors and remaps for increased power so if you bought a stage 1 and wanted to upgrade you'd just have to buy the pulley, injectors and get the ecu remapped. The actual superchargers/hardware seem pretty bullet proof and if the engine is ok it should be run fine although they will expose a weak headgasket. An oil cooler is recommended on a vortech kit as the supercharger's bearings are lubricated by engine oil which causes secondary heating. Good engine mounts are essential as the extra power puts a lot of strain on these components. A set of quality mounts such as vibratechnics costs about £300. The total cost would probably be around the £3000 mark for the kit, fitting and extra bits such as the mounts.

you could superglue some small loops on the back of the badge and fix it to the grille with wire. I sprayed mine red and handpainted the black border with a model brush. Sad I know, but looks great :)

Think you can just cut them off using a sharp pair of wire cutters (are the ones you are talikng about crimped at both ends?) Replace them with similar clips as they are better than jubliee clips but I suppose either would do the job.

Don't think the dealers sell them but they will sell you a new maf at £331 a throw one in for free :) It's not absolutely necessary to have one, but it makes it makes going on/off the throttle much smoother as it straightens the air out which enters the maf. You only relly need it at the airbox/airfilter end of the maf.

Guy's has the V9 charger, low comp pistons, 944 injectors, 13 psi pulley, remap and some other goodies :)

The unichip can be reprogrammed so if you have future mods in mind such as cams it would be cheaper in the long term as you'd only have to pay for rolling road time. The unit can be removed and sold separately when you sell the car. Not sure whether the map is any better or not but I've heard that when the unichip is used, the car is mapped to run rich and the unichip is used to lean out the mixture.

The chip tuning may be ok on American spec cars but will they work on european 2.9 engines and different fuel? People who have had the VF-Eng kit fitted in the UK have had issues with there kits due to software problems and some have had to resort to custom tuning as the off-the-shelf chips won't work. The other issue is maf placement. It has to be far enough from the supercharger inlet to prevent the engine running rich and stalling. I'd want to be satisfied that these issues had been resolved before purchasing a supercharger kit and worrying about about belt slippage issues etc. Other than that the chargers and hardware are pretty bullet proof.
