What are the best spark leads and plugs for a VR6
stormseeker replied to BarneyVR6's topic in Engine Bay
Avoid Mobil 1 it's too thin! I've heard some horror stories of VR6 engines run exclusively on 0W40 from new dying of oil pump failure at 70 to 80k ish miles due to the pressure relief valve in the pump getting stuck in its bore. VW recommend their Synta Silver which is 10W40 I think? Ideally should run 10W40 in winter & 15W40 in summer. -
:D :D :D :D :D :D

My advice would be to get some gauges instead :D :D :D (sorry - I just couldn't resist  )

Could always try Calibra lights instead  - That should unite the warring Corrado/Calibra factions.... Imagine the post on the Calibra forum - "I've just fitted everything from a VW Corrado apart from the headlights to my Calibra, now it's got real class...."

Air flow director only working on feet and windscreen

Some discussion of this very subject inthis thread. -
So how come you can erase files (i.e. lots of bytes) from your CF (Compact Flash) card without erasing the whole thing? So the original, "base" mileage is stored in OTP and then you can't write to it anymore (cos it's OTP!!!) so how does the cluster retain the base+travelled mileage (or km'age!). Must take mine to bits and have a poke around....

Correct!!! am im pritty sure you Cannot program them without the correct equipement, and in eprom chip is READ ONLY and can not be programed via a circuit. I.E. you cannot incriment it. Wrong! EPROMs (only one E) are erased by UltraViolet EEPROMs are electrically erasable - like Flash memory. Usually requires a high(er) voltage (like 12V) than the 5/3.3V data levels to re-programme it. And it needs no external power source to retain its contents - take the Compact Flash Card out of your digicam, leave it in a drawer for a few months and see if you piccies of your C have disappeared :) The VW spec. for the MFA digi-cluster states that it can be rolled forward once only (e.g. replacing a broken cluster) and cannot be reset. maybe that was a myth just to try and stop people clocking! Maybe there's a stray 12V flying around in the back of the cluster...

Did the Clio driver stop and offer you a lift :D :D

Personally, I reckon that if they were being really arsey, it wouldn't make the blindest bit of difference if the car that stopped you had "limo tint" all round (inc. front windscreen!) ! They are (literally) a law unto themsleves! The police can't be prosecuted for committiong a crime if it's in the line of duty - i.e. they could argue that they had to have dark tints to covertly observe other drivers...

Is the Green Storm still on there too??? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... egory=9873

Now the penny drops! I think I get it! Different wheel widths need different offsets! :D
-
Have to be a different type of sensor or out of fast moving air (if you want an accurate reading) due to "wind chill" effect.
-
Hmmm, I just did a quick search and came up withthis thread in which kevhaywire states... The Speedlines are ET46 and the VW manual says the wheels have to be ET43 for the VR6, so anything from 43 to 46 will work :?: :? :?: (later) edit: just checking a few aftermarket wheels and they all quote ET35 for the VR too. S I guess ET35 it is then

I think that's the better way to do it :) :D :) - engine laquer on the calipers didn't survive the Honda Revolutions track day - now not looking so bright blue, more bluey/browny/black in places & bubbled!

"Thermal Shock" !!! :D :D I thought it was "Hydro Lock" or somthing like that - i.e. water gets in the cylinders and can't be compressed so generally shags (technical term!) pistons/rods etc. i.e V V V expensive. BUT you have to have the air filter completely submerged - i.e. about 2 foot of standing water!!! My mate's got a whopping big CAI on his Prelude with the filter right down in behind the bumper chin spoiler, and he's sooooo woried about hydro-lock that he's started looking at aftermarket bypass valves you can get - they fit in your air intake tubing closer to the throttle body and if they detect water in the pipe they they open a valve to the outside world (effectivley bypassing the air filter but stopping you hoovering up that big puddle/ford/stream/river etc.) e.g. the AEM air bypass valve. I've seen a video demo of this where they have the air filter in a bucket of water and the engine still running OK!!! :D In answer to your question 2. the electrical coonections are to operate the "Carbon Canister Frequency Valve (N80)" aren't they???

In the absence of a Bentley, what would be the best mix of Haynes/Lindsay Porter manuals for a VR6? I bought the Porter manual the other week and although it does cover the 2.9 VR6 (ABV) engine the diagrams look like they've been copied straight from ETKA, so they aren't over detailed. So best combination would be:- Mk2 Golf Haynes & Porter Golf/Polo/Corrado ??? What about a Mk3 Golf or Passat Haynes manual - any good for the Corrado?

Looking at your C's reflection while driving...

Which is best though? Although I never tire of looking at totty (who would?) at least you know with your C it's yours when you get it home and you can give it a good hard rubbing down..... time for the cold shower :!: -

Maybe it would have been better trying to sort this out with John privately than airing it here in public.
