Only just seen this but deffo worth changing the cables if they are originals, did mine 2 years ago and it's been perfect since. They are self lubricating, when old the boots split and they loose grease etc plus they stretch, at £10 a side it's a no brainer You're running MK4 calipers already aren't you Jim?
-
Might be the coilpack itself cracked - very common point of failure when they get old, also a plastic clip thing missing
-
CIPO's issue sounds like a thermostat stuck open or lazy.
-
That's a very good point Kev - I wonder what percentage of people who service there own cars actually go through the ELSA checklist and actually lube all the locks with the correct stuff plus the sunroof guides, check underseal etc... That VW lock stuff is the nuts - the only time I have had a frozen lock on a VW was the year I forgot to use it!
-
That's correct - unfortunatly it's the only lock on the car that you can't build to match the existing key so ideally you buy it and re-tumble the other 4 locks to match that key number.
-
Heard of it happening but assumed it was not closed properly... The C has 2 catches plus that middle latch but then again it is a seriously heavy bonnet compared with a Golf. That middle catch is less than £10 from VW, well worth getting a new one if the spring is getting tired.
-
What's wrong with how it's advertised - looks a really good car and good advert too, especially for eBay - someone got a bargain there!
-
VR fuel pump just seem to die like this but as above, try new ECU, Fuel pump relays and an ignition switch if not been changed recently
-
You can Kev, not sure how I'll get it too you though as I'm out all weekend... Can bring into work tomorrow if you can collect - welcome to come for Lunch if you like?

Here is the bender Kev... http://www.concepttools.co.uk/p/SYKES-P ... -3560.aspx

The only real issue is it always seizes to the union nut so can only really be used once - ie next time you go to change a flexi it's so soft it twists. Apparently you should only use brass nuts with copper - not copper or steel although the coated VW ones are a good compromise. I like the steel pipes though - still look like new after 15 years!
-
Kev - just posted in your members thread... For the steel stuff you need an SP Flaremaster or this which I think is better - so simple to use - 2CC had previously bought a franklin one and it just slips and won't grip the pipe, I have loads of OE pipe, ends and a really good bending tool specifically for the coated pipe but never bought a flaring kit as I have access to one at a mates garage.
-
Kev, if you're buying a Flare Tool check out Automec's version of the SP Flaremaster - best I've seen and 2CC picked one up at the Classic Car show. http://www.automec.co.uk/oakes_tools/oa ... e_set.html

Help needed dont know whats wrong(FIXED)(NO NEW ISSUE)
Supercharged replied to philie's topic in Engine Bay
The nut is welded to the catalyst but the probe itself is just screwed in - mine wasn't that tight at all... 22mm spanner -
changed my clutch but it still slips wtf??
Supercharged replied to marmite monster's topic in Drivetrain
That's the second faulty LUK clutch I've heard about in as many weeks... -
I wouldn't bother with the rears and the 288's are 5 stud only so won't fit. The usual upgrade path is to fit the standard 280mm VR6 / G60 brakes to the front using carriers and capipers from either car and G60 (4 stud) discs.

ignition SWITCH positions, 3 or 4? key matching question too
Supercharged replied to krnau's topic in Interior
Hmmm - that part isn't an ignitiion barrel - it's a steering lock so nothing you can test with a meter... The light on the key - it's not an LED but you change the battery in the same way you wopuld a normal key - just insert a thin coin and twist. -
The DX bolt is 6 sided and requires a washer, the original is a 12pt bolt with built in washer - the new standard PG/G60 bolts that VW sell are fine now.
-
Lambda wiring would be the next thing to check...
-
If you get a new switch though you can use that to start it without actually fitting it - make sure you buy it from VW too, pattern parts are not reliable. Not difficult to fit by the way - one small screw but just a bit awkward to get too!
-
Yeah - that will be it... Do you think he actually took the plug out? - they sometimes go if you shake the key around in the crank position... Have you got a new switch yet? - if so just plug this in to test, doesn't have to be fitted. Getting the old one out is also fun :)
-
I'd check the connections to the back of the stereo and the blue speed signal wire but this usually just makes the spoiler stop working. It's most likely a failing ignition switch I'd say
-
Hmmm, yeah it will be the imobiliser kicking in and not letting you start it... Did you have the key in the ignition and the steering unlocked?? Maybe you left it too long between opening the door and trying to start up - most alarms cut in after a period of time, try the open button on the key of you have one to activate the central locking.
