  1. Haha, I'm not skilled in this area tbh, I just try to take plenty of pictures, label everything, and bag all bolts in labelled bags. Being meticulous pays off in the end. Obviously didn't anticipate this level of spending with regard to engine mounts and manifold etc, so it'll need an additional pay day to support it all! That said, I WILL make National Day so I plan to get it back in and running by mid April which gives me a couple of weeks contingency before taxing at the end of April/beginning of May. Clutch should be good as it was replaced less than 20k ago, and hopefully no horrors lurk behind the chain covers as they were replaced about 6k ago. I'll probably get a little ultrasonic cleaner for the injectors too for good measure, but apart from that its just consumables, gaskets and seals, re-wrap the looms and replace a few nuts and bolts. I've already got paint for the lump and plenty of cleaning gear so fingers crossed, I don't have any more surprises!
  2. Cheers guys. I can imagine Chris. Just need to keep the final bill away from the missus! It's ok James, I won't be put off and I'll be back for National Day. I've done it before (albeit to a mk3 Golf GTI 8v) so I'm not overly phased by it. Need to start stripping the lump down a bit more and ordering a few more parts, then its a good clean of the bay and powdercoating a few parts before re-assembly. Job done!

    Scraper

vw classic parts mate. Don't think passenger side is still available though.
  4. Didn't quite go as planned today. The engine is out, but I unfortunately sheared a few studs from the headers to the downpipe. :( Everything else came out relatively simply. The hardest and longest part of the entire operation was mounting the engine on the bloody stand! Now you see me. Now you don't! A few others One other thing, it doesn't look good, but can anyone identify these parts that were bouncing about at the bottom of my gearbox bellhousing please. Need a new front and rear engine mount I think, so may as well go the whole hog and get the lot. This is starting to get expensive..................
  5. Excellent, thanks mate! :thumbleft:
  6. What was your brief to oilman Rog? There's not much difference in price between this and the Fuchs stuff, and I need to order some in the next couple of weeks. My mileage is closer to yours but I think sounds closer to what Jim has described (just old and tired) if that makes any difference.........
  7. Think it should be fine Rog. If it is a genuine 2.9 then no reason why not, but even the 2.8 with your original cams and inlet manifold will see you around the same power as is I believe mate.
  8. I believe so yeah, although I cant say Ive ever seen one tbh.
  9. The mk3 Golf synchro was 2.9l. Very few sold though so not well known.
  10. XL Leather colouring kit, small repair kit and care kit ordered from Furniture Clinic today, woop woop! Need to send up my headrest for colour match Monday but they say it should all be sent out within 24 hours of receiving it so hopefully with me by next weekend. Wiring and pipes all disconnected from the bay now so just exhaust and driveshafts tomorrow then it will be out. Pics to follow tomorrow.
  11. No they are correct, factory option heated leather mate.
  12. Leather too, bargain for what you paid Craig! Yeah I'd certainly be up for another local meet, I too missed the last one. Not too soon though as I'm off the road for probably another 5 weeks. :(
  13. Well on one side it's a puppy so will be bought up with the kids, and I've not heard what has happened with the new born though. Has it been said the baby was mauled? It could be that the baby was smothered which is not unheard of, yet no less tragic obviously.
  14. Yes mate. Saw it last night actually which was a bit spooky. We've had a talk about it but not come to a decision yet. It could happen with any dog tbf but the breed are known to be very good with children generally. Still puts a big doubt in our mind though with a 10 month old son. We'll give it some more thought before paying out any more though, as at the moment it's only £100 we will have lost which is not the end of the world.
  15. I'm in Fareham, Hants........oh yeah it's on the right.
  16. At least it's gone to a good home. Onward and upward!
  17. Yeah I have Chris. I ordered a couple of parts from there a while back and although they were happy to sell to me there was barely any discount over dealer rrp, and I get decent discount from the dealer anyway. I'll go back and try to set up a trade account now I'm "car club manager" though, so hopefully they'll be good to me!
  18. Ordered a few bits today. New rad, oil cooler and seals, water pump, inlet manifold gaskets, and drive belt. That'll do for now, although the list will grow once its out and inspected on Saturday. Obviously service items regardless but I'll wait til I know everything else before having my pants pulled down from VW. Gonna pop in and see the powdercoater that Martin (VR6South) suggested as well if I have time this weekend. Got no further on with it yet, although I'll be in tomorrow and Thursday lunchtime to finish labelling, disconnect driveshafts and exhaust, then its just a couple of bolts holding it in! Should have a decent picture update once its out.
  19. Thanks Chris. I'll do it like you did then mate. Makes sense with ease of getting it out actually.:thumbleft:
  20. No it doesnt. Tried just before xmas and ended up having to scrap the original and put the new one straight on. Shame really as all it needed was paint.
  21. No. Can't afford non essential items. Missus has just paid a deposit for a bloody Malamute puppy now!
  22. I absolutely know where your coming from mate!
  23. Chris, how were the manifold bolts to remove? Mine should be coming out the weekend hopefully, but I'm panicking about shearing a bolt and having an utter nightmare!
  24. Oooh! Its your car I've been trying (and failing) to use as inspiration for mine!!! I love this, frikkin awsome! :thumbleft:
