I found the 288's much better than the 280 which are just not strong enough, the calipers on the 288's are found on lots of cars i have a 2.5 alfa 156 which has almost identical ones on. I don't agree that the 288's are the same crap as the 280's i think they are much, much better. The brakes have always been the Achilles heel of the VR, and the cupra set up is probably one of the best set up's bearing in mind you dont need the brackets, they are just a bolt on affair, finding them however is quite difficult at a good price, but all you need is a slice of luck one day. Redborbet, yea mate i could have got you wrong there, i wasn't trying to be disrespectful, just trying to help the op as much as possible with what i have found out over the years. I would like to hear the outcome, all too often you hear people trying to do something and you never find out how it ends up.

The pricing was for "not getting my hands dirty" and "i haven't got time" so presumably he would pay someone to fit them, check for leaks/replace the seals, and paint them if they were second hand, plus the cost of the kit if you could buy it all at once which are rare bearing in mind how old our cars are getting. Yea emu had a set for £500 and £700, some brake fluid for bleeding then get someone to fit them, for a budget of £250-£450 ?? Sound a lot closer to £500-£750, than £450 to me, so im not sure how you're pricing that, but like i said if the chap can do it on that budget then good luck to him. And the brembo's may well go over the 312's disks you have. http://the-corrado.net/showthread.php?74481-Big-Brakes-4Pots-323mm-6-Pots-343mm-280-mm-rears

If you can get a Brembo set all-in, without doing any painting, or getting your hands dirty, for £250-£450 can you let us all know how you did it ? From the research i have done you'll be looking at at least £750, if you can get it done for the budget you have, then firstly good for you, and then please report back because a lot of other people will be very interested. Somehow "not" getting your hands dirty, and "i dont have time" are things which just don't go hand-in-hand with having a near 20 year old car, i could be wrong, i hope for your sake i am, but i doubt it.

Which are brembo's, which are pricey, and from what i have read are not very well matched to the performance of the master cylinder which make the brake peddle feel dead. I got new disks (genuine vw still in wrapper), and reasonable second hand 288 calipers for £40 off fleabay, compare that to £500-£700ish for the brembo's. Now they are all bedded in, the brake peddle feels dead at the start but put a bit more pressure on and they feel twice as strong, they feel matched to the rest of the car, they just feel right. As they always say its your car and your money, my set up with pads and braided hoses about £110, best £110 i have ever spent on my C...........

I think this one has popped up before, its a bit of a marmite car..........

I did the work you have done two years ago, and rather than get stuff dipped/blasted by someone else, i decided to do it myself with an angle grinder and heavy duty wire wheel, i got through nine of them. Point being i wanted to do it myself, dismantling, cleaning, painting, then building it up again. Restoration, to me, means doing the work myself, not only to say that i have done it but also so that i know what sort of a job ive done. It took me eight months of holidays and weekends, if you want a job doing properly then do it yourself that what i say anyway. Next job for you will be the sub frame, good luck mate.

Perhaps it scares him driving it, and the fear of some idiot rear-ending you.

An average car on average miles is in motion 3% of its life, and 18 year old car with 30k has moved a lot less than that, i would want to know where has it been sitting for all those years ?

If your going fully OEM then you would surely have to buy every part individually from the stealers, therefore my high guesstimate..... However, surely going second hand, trying to find a serviceable set off someone would be the way to go if you were serious.....

Yes, and a Ford Escort..........

What about the struts ? Im presuming the chap who started this thread is starting with nothing........

I have never heard of someone asking that one, i would imagine they wouldn't be cheap, and at the price they will be asking, you could get a tremendous set of coilovers, and just set them as high as they go, and there you go. Ok i guess around £2500......

Err ok some people eh?, thats stupidity beyond words. He has a VSR for sale as well for only £1550 , second thoughts don't get me started on that one, do ya think he'll sell it ?
-
I think politeness is the key, if your pleasant about it then who could take a simple question the wrong way ?

I agree it has been some time since we paid for this............

But will someone buy it for £1k ? You can ask what you want for it, but if no-ones buying then its a bit fruitless.

Any structural engineers/surveyors on the forum? I need some advice!
daleyboy replied to eugopnosaj's topic in Off-topic Chat
I did read it, what i meant was that they need to know one way or the other whether it is a problem or not, and you can only really get that from having it looked at from someone who knows what they are doing. You are right they will probably err on the side of caution, having re-read what i had written it did come accross a bit harsh, so i apologise to you for that. -

So he has cracking around the bay window of a house, and a survey wont help ? seriously ? What the surveyor will put in his report and what he actually says to you on-site may be a bit different, so i would have a chat with him, either way he will have a much better idea than a lay person would, he would know the difference between historic and recent movement. But to recommend to someone who is about to make the biggest purchase of their lives, that a survey wont help is in my view reckless. -

.....and you wouldn't buy a car without having someone look at it who knew what they were doing. I would walk away but thats easy for me to say, the only alternative is to have a structural survey done yourself, then at least any decision would be informed rather than not. The sellers do sound like they are trying to pull a fast one, out of principle i would look elsewhere, if i walk into a shop and i dont like what they say i go to another one. -
From what i remember you need the mk3 discs as the mk4 ones have a different offset and wont go in the carriers. You dont need any new bolts to fit the carriers to the hub i just reused mine which were a couple of years old anyway they are only a few quid from the dealers so wouldnt fret too much if you need to change them.

I bought my Schrick inlet from this guy, he was ok, although some of his stuff he was selling was of questionable quality shall we say. He had a red Corrado LHD for sale and it had the most shocking respray done to it, funnily enough the quality of the paint didn't show up on the photo's in the ad he put in fleabay, which i suppose explains his reputation or lack of it. I always try to treat people as i find them, and he was quite a nice fella, but just purely in it for the money.

Just another civil liberty going down the pan, they'll tell us all who to vote for next........ -
I think it looks ok, quite interesting, not sure i'd be seen in it without a disguise...........

You can't rely on the media to tell us the truth, if we were visited by aliens do you think it would get on the front page of the sun ? They'd be basically endorsing pandemonium and panic, some times you have to find out for yourself whats going on, but the truth is entwined with misinformation and just the outcome of some people's imagination, so you have to read between the lines, its difficult to distinguish between the truth and a lie. Evidence however is scarce, and so open to human manipulation that what you end up doing is finding out more about your own belief system than what is front of you. Either way sometimes its best not to know because you'll end up too scared to leave your house, doesn't stop you wondering though.........
