  1. Heh.. not enough to shoehorn an LS motor in there, but then also stick some forced induction on it as well. Absolutely bonkers. I love that people attempt swaps like this!!

    Coolant

Honestly never heard of it before. I'd highly recommend just picking up the current standard VW coolant from any VW parts department... is it G13+ currently?
  3. Wow - not sure I've ever seen wheels that badly corroded before!! Wonder if it was parked in water or on wet ground for a while? Cause if so I wonder what the underside is like! :|
  4. Have you had a look at the non-paying bidder section on eBay, Kip? Looks as though they have pretty clearly defined guidelines and should be able to resolve it pretty quickly. http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/unpaid-items.html
  5. I really hope for your sake it's something simple to resolve, and not indicative of some other problem or gremlin to resolve!
  6. The Land Rover clip is slightly shorter than the one that comes on your cables... think it would work still but didn't look as sturdy / durable as the one on the cable :)
  7. Unfortunately as I've sold my Corrado, and so no longer have a car to test any designs on, not sure I can take this any further.
  8. With the Fiesta, isn't it just the injectors? I used to get it on my ST too - but it was definitely nowhere near the volume that I got it on the VR.
  9. I don't want to break your morale any further on this but returning to OE cams, new tappets and even a new head (was replaced during the last rebuild) and that damn noise persisted on mine. The strangest thing about it all though was that the noise wouldn't be present initially for the first 50-100 miles or so and would gradually return, as the tappets broke in. I'd genuinely give my right testicle to understand what causes it to happen on some VR's and not all of them and more importantly how to fix it once and for all.
  10. On the plus side, you'll know the VR6 engine inside out after this debacle!
  11. You can bump the 16v Corrado up from standard 256mm brakes to 280mm from the G60. A reasonably inexpensive upgrade as those calipers were used on other VW's but also a fairly decent upgrade in stopping power :) In terms of manufacturers, OE from the dealer are always good but something like ATE or Pagid will see you right!
  12. You can buy hex bit sets pretty cheap. They seem to be used in a few places on the Corrado so worth having in your arsenal!
  13. It's from Sniff Petrol. So yeah, it's a joke :)

    Jims New Shed..

Yeah - don't worry about that. Won't be getting stuck into the underside situation.. that's definitely one for garages with the knowledge and tools! Pretty much done with anything but the most simple DIY tasks on my cars for now.. just stresses me out far too much.

The seeds of BMW ownership were sowed with that 7 series I bought off you. It was only a matter of time!

    Jims New Shed..

Good thing about these cars is the amount they sold, and that there's also lots of FAQ's and DIY guides out there from kind owners :) http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=426640 Tempted to tackle this myself along with new pads and discs as it looks like a doddle really. Just not so keen on rolling around under a 5 series myself doing more heavy duty stuff. Awesome! Hope you enjoy it mate :) Has that got the 3.7 V6 in it? My old man bought a similar era SL 350 a few months back and he loves it so far. Already landed him with a couple of hefty bills though.

    Jims New Shed..

That's fine. As I say, a new challenge seems to have inspired me somewhat.

    Jims New Shed..

(I PM replied to Jim Bowen.. I wasn't ignoring him!) :) Well, been an interesting week or two. Learned a fair bit about the 5 series already. Got a raft of problems that are going to need sorting, and rather than feeling disappointed or annoyed, I actually feel like some enthusiasm has been rekindled. My Fiesta has now also been sold, so this is my only car! Gulp! Good job I don't depend on it for work or anything :) Some pretty fascinating differences on these cars. The rear suspension is pretty complicated - not least down to the air suspension system employed on the rear (as it's a Touring model) but also because the entire rear suspension is mounted into a subframe which can just be dropped off the car to be worked on. There's a multitude of control arms and the like. I got my car for peanuts, but already looking like having to double my initial expenditure on a number of repairs - badly buckled alloy (managed to find a brand new one locally for 25 quid!), wheel bearings, bushes, brakes all round, track rods, etc. Also found that the handbrake isn't working properly, and on the 5 series the handbrake mechanism is entirely separate from the caliper and uses a separate set of shoes much like one has with drum brakes, on the inside of the rotor... As she currently is, the ride quality isn't great and it all feels a bit wayward. Hoping to get it booked in soon for a bit of an overhaul in a few areas and it should then drive like what I was expecting. The engine is kind of interesting.. feels very flat at low revs but keep your foot in and once the turbo spools up, it feels like someone has lit an afterburner. Looks like it out the back too... these motors are apparently very prone to getting sooted up, so I think I might stick in a tank of redex and take it for an Italian tune up on a quiet road somewhere. Also just had the headlights corrected at my local hand car wash.. guy offered to clean the lenses up (the usual problem with 'modern' headlights of them going foggy) for just £15 a side and he did an excellent job. They look superb now!
  19. Ah excellent... hadn't actually changed the ISV on my VR (done it on a valve) but was just trying to visualise where it lived on the VR! Apologies.
  20. Remove the HT lead covers (easier to remove the HT heads too to get access) and it should be pretty straightforward. You can't really put the leads back incorrectly as the corresponding cylinder is stamped on each coil on the coilpack and if you have OEM leads, they're numbered too :)
  21. Tweet from Paul Brackley (who was Edd's helper on Wheeler Dealers for years and years) - someone asked if he was surprised to hear Edd had left Wheeler Dealers, replied: "It was only a mater of time!!not surprised at all." So maybe things have been a little rocky for a while.
  22. I admire his convictions and it sounds like whilst he could have stayed on and just cashed the cheques, he felt it was going against what he wanted to promote in the series. Credit to him for not just taking the money. I hope he goes on to feature in something new and equally (more?!) techie than Wheeler Dealers. There's plenty of petrolheads out there eager for that kind of content!
