  2. I wouldn't withhold any info to the insurance co as should the worse happen this is a £10K+ car at current prices?

  4. Its not a lemon, its a 20 year old car, they break, most break to the point they're scrapped long before. We buy these cars because we like to tinker and learn as we go. As others have said, you deserve a little break from the spanners now Rog, fingers crossed for you ;)
  5. Diesel wings certainly seem to rot out more frequently for sure, I can't say I've noticed and increase in noise from ditching them, but my car is an 11 year old TDi so I expect some roughness tbh. I've not noticed similar rust issues wit A3s, Leon, Toledo or Octavias of the same platform?
  6. He seems a little confused whether he's private or trade? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1995-VOLKSWAGEN-CORRADO-VR6-GREEN-PART-EXCHANGE-TO-CLEAR-AUGUST-2015-MOT-/161426084420?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2595be9244

    We're doomed.

Top Gear is sold all over the world, the BBC makes a profit from it hence its current slapstick themed shows - a sort of The Last of the Summer Wine - Next Generation
  8. I doubt 20 year old stub axles will allow you to do this, its just an advisory, the tester is covering his arse should the VOSA rep turn up he can say in his opinion there is wear but for taper bearing in his opinion its acceptable. Another tester may not even mention it, the current message from VOSA is if in doubt pass and advise unless you have definite reason to fail it. Don't be tempted to over tighten them as you'll just set them binding at 3 and 9 o'clock and they'll fail quickly
  9. The stub axles also wear, jack the car up and with the front wheels chocked and the handbrake off put your hands on the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock position, there should be the slightest of play here. Now change to 12 and 6 o'clock position and you'll find far more play as this is the plane where the stub axles wear in normal use. An advisory is just that, they've noticed something worthy of note that's not a fail
  10. Has there ever been a situation where 1/2 or 1/4 wouldn't do the job? 99% of the time I use 1/4 or 1/2 ratchets, I have a small 3/8s set on standby should access be tight, I only use a short low range 1/2 torque wrench, sometimes with a reducer to downsize to 1/4.
  11. Do you actually mean torque wrench or are you talking about ratchets?
  12. I don't know, I presumed it help prevent the arch being pushed in, fixing at the top edge under the bonnet edge, front behind the bumper, rear on the sill and the edge of the arch so leaving the 12 0'clock on the arch area vulnerable? I thought under the wings was a pressure area, the sponge wouldn't stop the arch bulging out as its just wedged in place?
  13. Does the gear have a threaded hole in the end? If you insert a bolt into the thread does it push the gear off the motors shaft? If the gear is no longer needed I'd carefully grind through the side of it to release its hold on the shaft if the previous idea doesn't work and you don't have a suitable puller
  14. I've had MK3s and MK4s that have rotted there wings inside out behind that spongy / foam arch strengthener (they're always **** wet through), you'd think VW would learn or try something different to add strength at the 12 o'clock position in the arch. I'd put them in the bin personally
  15. 2 spots in 5 days, white N plate on Earl Street Crewe at 7.45PM last Thursday (I was in the VR6 going the opposite way) and today walking the dogs I spotted J ### KMB? parked at the rear of a house in Willaston Nantwich
  16. The cams don't have shells. Your best bet it to take the cams to an engine machine shop for assessment, but to me they're scrap, if you can't machine them to as new the journals will grind away the "new" head and its cam caps as they are softer alloy. You can't swap cam caps from one head to another as they're machined bolted to the head in the first instance, line bored so the bores are perfectly round
  17. If it doesn't have a winder I'm out. I don't like my iphone 5 at all....... First and last apple product
  18. If the vote goes yes and future elected bodies screw it up (whether its 5 years or 25 years - beyond that I won't care as I'll be having difficulty remembering my own name......) will I get a vote to allow them back into the union? Either way I'm looking forward to a few holidays in Scotland next year :)

    Cat D

As the insurance co decide what's cat C or D themselves (and cat D has a higher resale value for themselves so there's financial incentive to declare any damaged car cat D) often the damage is very similar for either, insurance cos never play fair do they? Take any 20 year old car on its merits, buyer beware
  21. I emailed J&L over 6 months ago asking if they could rebore the VR6 M/C to the next size up (to reduce pedal travel) and they never even replied....... Is the bore size stock?
  22. I drove that distance for my spare classic green wings, paid £80 each for them too. And a similar distance in the opposite direction for my engine also
  23. So leave your damaged bonnet with the vendor and put your sons new boot in the back of you C?
