  1. Sounds like a slipping belt to me!
  2. Let me get this straight... You have a 240vAC->5vDC charger for a device that you want to be able to use in the car? If so you won't be able to use the 12v lighter socket without a DC-DC converter anyway. To be honest I'm not exactly sure what you're asking but once it's clear I'm sure there'll be a simple solution.
  3. This is a great thread. It's making me want to go and try to paint something! I prepped and sprayed my replacement front panel about 18 months ago but I didn't really have a clue and was making it up as I went along. The finish wasn't great but most of it is invisible so it'll do as a first attempt. I've got a driver's door to fit that needs spraying to match the car. Maybe that'll become my next victim... 3hp is only 9.3A. It'll be fine with a standard 13A plug.
  4. Very possibly. In my experience a really knackered fuel filter will make the pump work hard and, hence, become rather noisy. Changing the fuel filter isn't a big or expensive job and probably worth doing anyway. You could always test the fuel pressure before just so you know though.
  5. Theoretically you can test them with a glass jar. Pull each one out in turn and check the spray pattern. It should be obvious if any are not up to scratch. My car never misfired when driving but had starting issues as you describe. Usually it'd start but misfire and run on two or three cylinders for several seconds before clearing itself.
  6. I'm not sure what's missing but I would definitely not recommend supporting the weight of your engine on the sump. A safer option is a piece of wood between the jack and the clutch housing.
  7. I used to think the same about my 1.8 16v. In the end the starting problems were all down to worn injectors. If your car has done more than 120k miles on the current injectors you could do worse than thinking about replacing them. £137 all in for the four.
  8. You could well be losing fuel system pressure via either the fuel pump non-return valve or the fuel pressure accumulator. I'd start with fuel pressure tests.
  9. Jealousy is such an ugly emotion.
  10. I bought the 1.8 because, at the time, they were cheaper. The cost differential between the 1.8 and the 2.0 is now much less. Personally, I'm happy with the 1.8 but I do think my friend's 2.0 is slightly nicer to drive day-to-day and it offers better economy.
  11. The pump is the same but I believe the housing is different to that of the Mk2. I went through all this before when the fuel pump housing on my Corrado sprung a leak. In the end I modified an early Mk2 8v GTI housing to fit with the intention of getting the proper housing later. That never happened though...
  12. I wouldn't recommend touching anything that you don't *know* is causing a problem at this stage. If you fiddle with the mixture settings you may just introduce further problems. Adjusting the mixture screw without proper gas analyser tools is asking for trouble.
  13. 0-186mph in ten seconds...
  14. There's some loop hole you can use to get a '92 K-plate car tested with the 3.5% CO limit. A guy I know used it to get his '92 K-plate Calibra Turbo through the emissions. I'll find out a bit more about it at my mate's dad's MOT garage.
  15. Solder them on then shrink sleeve them in black, then wrap in proper loom tape. Can't get better than that. jay No, I mean connecting the other end of the loom to the original headlamp connectors without modifying the original wiring.
  16. Those would be the Torx screws dazzyvr6 mentioned.
  17. People definitely put too much faith in the opinions of the motorcycle magazines. There's absolutely bugger all to choose between any of the litre-class bikes on the road and, even on the track, a great deal of the performance is untappable by the average rider. Me included. I sold my 2005 R1 last year and bought a 2004 DR-Z400 instead. The DR-Z struggles to top a ton but it's more fun on the roads around here than the R1 ever was. I miss the power occasionally but not often.
  18. I prefer the 1.8 16v over all of 'em due to the simplicity.
  19. 1. Yes. When I'd dead I expect all drivers to do the same. 2. Yes. It's just a car.
  20. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I know very little about turbocharging. Why would the choice of turbo be an issue if the maximum boost you're planning on running is six PSI? Surely six PSI is six PSI no matter what's generating it.
  21. I paid £2 total for the same connectors chopped off a scrap Corrado. They do seem to be few and far between at the scrap yards though. Just need to find a similarly elegant solution for connecting to the original plugs now...
  22. So what happens with the car? You just leave it at the end point?
  23. I can't believe it's possible to get tyres *that* hot on the road. Is it really? If we were talking about a track car then sure, but nobody's mentioned track use. I agree with the consistency comment on the 17s though....consistently awful :)
