Head gaskets arent majorly expensive it is the having them done at a gargae bit that bring tears to the eyes.. There is a reciept in the history for my car for a head gasket at a grand but that is VW dealer prices. Id expect to may a shade over half that unless you fancy doing it yourself... Id take the car to a mechanic that you trust and gat hime to have a sniff at it and go from there....

They do sound a bit tappety on start up but that should clear quite quickly, if it doesnt id be walking away... For 3-4k you will have a wide choice of VRs, leather is always a bonus - go and have a look at a few and youll get a feel for what you want.. VX220 is a great car, i had a blast in one not long ago and they are monsters!!!!

Well i had hope to have the car lowered by this time but have been distracted with cooling system problems which have finaly been sorted due to the replacement of various bits and bobs... Car didnt look pretty while changing the fans over, more like shed had a smack in the face!!! Still, hopefully the next update will be of some more good changes, currently have door handles and a replacement rear number plate surround being painted and then, hopefully, lowering - at last!!!!

Good question mate, i hope soon but i need to generate the funds first... I was a bit on the pink side mate, honestly i could get burnt sitting under a lamp!! Jimmi i understand you were chocker and didnt expect you to stop your stuff to run after me, it was a good chance for me to get stuck in... There are 2 fans that are mounted on the VR radiator, they shoulod be linked with a rubber belt, ie if you turn one by hand they should both move.... I should be anywhere between the max and min levels. As for circulation after turning the car off it depends on the temp, if mine is around the 100 degree mark it circs the water and runs the fan for a short period... If it seems bubbley id maybe try running the car up to temp with the cap off and massaging the top and bottiom radiator pipes to encourage any air from the system.. Head gasket wise id be wanting a very reliable second opinion before going down that road..

Looking good... I saw an advert for this car in an old CCGB Sprinter magazine today.. It had 120k on the clock at the time... Ill get in touch with KIP and see if he can run off a copy as it would be a nice item to have in the history folder... There was also a photo of all the 9 press car lined up...

Your standard hoses match the ones from a Passat and the Golf ones are different... Good opportunity to go braided...

Ive got a one of these aswell.. Main savings ive had is on any service parts, tools and electrical stuff is massively discounted... Regretably they dont discount cleaning stuff...

Thats a huge gauge error, may be worth changing the temp reader thats situated in the thermostat housing. Mine has AC aswell and has no effect on the system You are correct first fan should be at 95 degrees, another at 105 and the last (emergency) at 112. The fan speeds are different, ie speed 1 is a gentle and speed 3 sucks pedestrians from the pavement... To test your fan itself (to make sure itll do all 3): Run a 12 volts supply (from a spare car battery or the one in the car) to the pins on teh back of the motor. There are 4 in total, the left is the earth and the others are the three speeds, the fan should kick in on those 3 pins. I havent brideged my thermoswitch since it has been repaired but id imagine 2 speeds should be available, i dont think speed 3 comes from that sensor though..

Well at last i have a fully functioning fan!!!!!! Tested mine in comparison to Jimmis redundant one and simply two of the speeds on mine were dead.... Now the car runs between 90 and 95 depending on the speed and i get speed 1 fan at about 98, i know the other two work but it hasnt felt the need to kick them in yet.. I may try and dilute my coolant a little more to see if that drops the temp a little further but i reckon im a hell of a lot further forward than i was and can drive without worrying that im gonna cook the car... The only thing that has gotten hot to day is me as im sunburnt and will look like a lobster tomorrow - nice one!!! A huge thankyou to Jimmi for his help and guidance through this trauma... I wonder how long before something else goes wrong...
